HEALTH
Meningitis:
During the epidemiological week 3 (16 to 22 January 2012), a total of 39 cases and 3 deaths
(CFR 9.8%) were reported. Two health districts that had reached the alert threshold
epidemic in week 2, namely Bédjondo and Goundi (Region Mandoul) came out of phase
Alert to 3 weeks. No district is neither alert nor an epidemic during the three weeks. Of a
era to 3th epidemiological week a cumulative total of 94 cases including 7 deaths were reported (CFR
8.9%).
Actions:
WHO and the Ministry of Public Health has pre-positioned medicines and products
laboratory in the districts for the diagnosis and management of meningitis. WHO and its
partners conducted a fact-finding mission from 24 to 28 January 2012 and Bédjondo Goundi for
confirmation of the causative organism. Meningococcal A was confirmed as the causative pathogen.
Cholera: No cases of cholera have been reported from week 1 to week 3. The last cases of cholera
were reported in week 50 of 2011 by the District of Bongor (Mayo Kabbi East). In 2011,
the cholera epidemic has affected 37 districts of 62 with a cumulative total of 17 285 cases including 459 deaths (
a mortality rate of 2.6%), at the end of week 52.
Current Actions:
UNICEF and WHO are supporting the government by a preposition of drug products
WASH (hygiene kits, disinfectant) and laboratory products in 22 districts at high risk of cholera.
Measles: During epidemiological week 3 (16 to 22 January 2012), a total of 304 cases
with 4 deaths (CFR 1.3%) were reported. Of a era to 3th an epidemiological week
cumulative total of 1037 cases including 5 deaths were reported (CFR 0.4%).
Current Actions:
WHO and UNICEF are supporting the government for a vaccination campaign against measles in
throughout the country. A vaccination campaign was organized in 13 regions of 20 to 27 January 2012 and
continues in nine other regions that began January 27 to February 3, 2012. The campaign aims to vaccinate
at least 95% of children aged 6 to 59 months. The campaign also includes vaccination against
polio.
Polio: In 2011, a cumulative total of 467 cases of acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) were reported, with
PVS 131 (128 with type 1 and type 3). Of a era to 3th weeks in 2012, no cases of poliomyelitis
confirmed, but a cumulative total of 16 AFP cases were reported.
Current Actions:
Another vaccination campaign is scheduled from 17 to 20 February 2012 to improve coverage
immunization of children from birth to 59 months.
