        Sao Tome, Jun 16, 2020 (Lusa) - Sao Tome and Principe recorded today 10 positive cases of covid-19, based on 24 rapid tests carried out, bringing the country's total to 671, a source from the Ministry of Health announced.

        According to the ministry's spokeswoman, Isabel dos santos, with these 10 new cases, the country has a total of 671 infections by the new coronavirus. The number of fatalities remains at 12.

        According to the same source, there are 182 recovered cases, while the number of patients admitted to the field hospital has increased from eight to 14 people.

        In Africa, there are 6,770 confirmed deaths in almost 252,000 infected in 54 countries, according to the most recent statistics on the continent's pandemic.

        Among African countries that have Portuguese as their official language, Equatorial Guinea leads in number of infections and deaths (1,664 cases and 32 deaths), followed by Guinea-Bissau (1,492 cases and 15 deaths), Cape Verde (782 cases and seven dead), S?o Tom? and Pr?ncipe (671 cases and 12 dead), Mozambique (638 cases and four dead) and Angola (142 infected and six dead).

        The covid-19 pandemic has already claimed more than 436,000 deaths and infected more than eight million people in 196 countries and territories, according to a report by the French agency AFP.

            The 10 new cases of covid-19 recorded by the Ministry of Health result from 84 rapid tests carried out between Thursday and today.

            According to the same source, the number of recovered people also increased to 199, while two of the 12 patients admitted to the field hospital were discharged.

            Of the cumulative total of 693 cases of covid-19, the 12 deaths previously declared due to the new coronavirus remain.

            In Africa, there are 7,395 confirmed deaths in more than 275,000 infected in 54 countries, according to the most recent statistics on the continent's pandemic.

            Among African countries that have Portuguese as their official language, Equatorial Guinea leads in number of infections and deaths (1,664 cases and 32 deaths), followed by Guinea-Bissau (1,541 cases and 17 deaths), Cape Verde (849 cases and eight dead), S?o Tom? and Pr?ncipe (693 cases and 12 dead), Mozambique (668 cases and four dead) and Angola (166 infected and eight dead).

            Brazil is the Portuguese-speaking country most affected by the pandemic and one of the hardest hit in the world, when counting the second number of infected and dead (more than 978 thousand and 47 748, respectively), after the United States of America.

            The covid-19 pandemic has already claimed more than 454,000 deaths and infected more than 8.5 million people in 196 countries and territories, according to a report by the French agency AFP.

            The disease is transmitted by a new coronavirus detected in late December in Wuhan, a city in central China.

            After Europe succeeded China as the center of the pandemic in February, the American continent is now the one with the most confirmed cases and the most deaths.
