In a statement, Oikos explained that today it started delivering the first 250 kilos of fish, destined for families in poverty in the African country.

The emergency plan created by Oikos and its partner in S?o Tom? and Pr?ncipe, Marapa, aims to support "people most vulnerable to the crisis" caused by the covid-19 pandemic.

"In total, a ton of fish is expected to be distributed in the coming weeks," said the note.

According to the NGO, the central African country "faces a health crisis with the impact of the covid-19 and many families have seen their income reduced on a large scale, thus hampering access to diversified food products and jeopardizing their food security" .

As the fisheries sector is one of the most affected, due to the impossibility of having a safe market for sale, reduced income for the population and lack of outlets through restaurants and tourism, Oikos and its partners have activated a emergency to benefit both parties.

The distribution of the ton of fish in the coming weeks will also have the support of social entities such as the Red Cross, Caritas, Santa Casa da Miseric?rdia, Dilemb? Project, among others, the note said.

"This fish will be bought at a sale price to the artisanal fishing communities, most of them also already vulnerable before the crisis and who are suffering a direct impact of loss of income", guaranteed Oikos.

The Portuguese NGO also said that it believes that this action will "protect the nutritional situation of the most vulnerable families" while reducing "the state of poverty of families that depend on the fishing sector for their survival".

Oikos and Marapa will also support fish sellers by distributing ionized salt to associations and cooperatives and ice to markets, improving the fish's conservation capacity and reducing costs, he explained.

The two organizations have been working together on social action in that country since 2017, through the 'Kike Da Mungu' program [fish for the future in Angolar dialect], with funding from the European Union and the Portuguese Government, through the Cam?es Institute.

Globally, according to a report by the AFP news agency, the covid-19 pandemic has already claimed more than 318,000 deaths and infected more than 4.8 million people in 196 countries and territories.

More than 1.7 million patients were considered cured.

In Africa, there are 2,836 confirmed deaths, with more than 88,000 infected in 54 countries, according to the latest statistics on the continent's pandemic. S?o Tom? and Pr?ncipe records 246 cases and seven killed by the covid-19.
