  • Nigeria: Illness breaks out in Kwali

It is clear that something is going on there, but the description is a mess. "Whooping cough, upper respiratory track infections, and vomitting blood (coughing up blood perhaps?)" might be a sign of H1N1, not waterborne gastroenteritis.

Nigeria-Health: Gastro-enteritis breaks out in Kwali
News - Africa news .Health - About 37 persons have been hospitalized over a recent outbreak of Gastro-enteritis disease at Bako communities in Kwali Area Council of the F CT. The council's health Supervisory Councillor, Mr. Godwin Chiya, who disclosed this Friday, said the situation in the community was reported by the village head, Mr. Yusuf Etsu Bako, after some of his subjects developed whooping cough, upper respiratory track infections and were vomiting blood.

He said after receiving the report, the area council's management immediately mobilised health experts to the community to convey the affected victims to the community's health clinic and the council's general hospital, where drugs were immediately procured to treat them.

According to him, 10 persons were also affected at Fogbe community, which he said was also reported by elders of the community.

"From the report we received from health experts that were sent to the two affected communities, the cause of the disease was water borne," he said.

Reacting, the council's Chairman, Mr. Joseph Shazin, confirmed the outbreak and expressed sadness, saying the council after the report, ordered for the release of N.6 million to purchase drugs that were used to treat the affected victims.

The council boss said the council has already awarded contracts to sink hand pumping bore-holes in the affected communities.
