Malaria continues to kill more people in Namibia and sub-Saharan Africa than COVID-19 and it is essential to curb its spread, said Southern Africa Elimination 8 malaria program ambassador and former Namibian health minister Thursday. , Richard Kamwi.

Kamwi said COVID-19 and malaria were both fatal and should be treated with persistence.

He noted that Namibia, Botswana, Mozambique and Zimbabwe are currently experiencing a large increase in the number of malaria cases while facing the challenges of COVID-19.

“The sharp increase in the number of malaria cases could be due to drug resistance. If we are to reduce the death rate from malaria, it is necessary to seek the support of the ministry and to consider bringing together the malaria control mechanisms and COVID-19, "said Mr. Kwami.

According to him, malaria remains a serious threat to Namibian society due to the areas of massive mosquito breeding.

Kamwi also sent malaria drugs from Elimination 8 countries to Namibia to reduce the spread of the disease.

Upon receipt of this donation, the current Namibian Minister of Health and Social Services Kalumbi Shangula said that his country would continue to work closely with the Elimination 8 group of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) to check the progression of malaria.

"We are here to witness the partnership in the fight against the spread of malaria and Namibia will continue to prioritize the fight against malaria and work with its partners," added Mr. Shangula.
