Togo quarantines avian flu outbreak area
    John Zodzi

Togo has culled hundreds of birds, quarantined a poultry farm, closed a local bird market and banned the movement of poultry following an outbreak of the highly pathogenic H5N1 avian flu, the government says.

More than 800 birds have been culled, Batasse Batawui, director of livestock at Togo's Ministry of Agriculture, told Reuters.

The government said in a statement that the birds were incinerated and eggs destroyed to stop the spread...

    EPIDEMIOLOGICAL COMMENTS

Two infected farms which are approximately 5 km apart as the crow flies, each with a population of 1,000 layers. Both infected farms are more or less located in urban areas. The first one is in a house with no physical separation between the rearing building (nor foot baths) and the house yard. There are almost no biosecurity measures applied. The second farm is much more isolated, with some biosecurity measures. In both cases, eggs are sold on the premises without any biosecurity measures for the management of the trays. Given the numerous failures in the application of biosecurity measures, the precise source of the infection could not be determined through the traceability survey, although these two farms have in common the fact that the customers are served on the premises and inside the farm's fence.

      EPIDEMIOLOGICAL COMMENTS
The traceability investigation revealed that the bags used to transport the litter when it was changed had already been used several times and in other farms. The application of biosafety measures was not satisfactory. The affected locality is not very far from the border with Ghana, which also reported the disease ten days earlier. According to the investigation, this new outbreak does not appear to be epidemiologically linked to the outbreaks reported in the previous months in the localities of Djagblé and Klobatème (some 30 km away from the new outbreak), which have not yet been closed.
