Nigeria: Bird Flu Spreads to 18 States. "No Need to Panic" Health Minister Says

    02 02 15

The Supervising Minister of Health, Dr Khaliru Alhassan, on Monday advised Nigerians not to panic over the outbreak of Avian Influenza, saying the situation was under control.

?The federal government confirmed the outbreak of Avian influenza in two commercial poultry farms and a live bird market in Kano and Lagos states, respectively.

``Since then, further outbreaks have been confirmed in 16 other states by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture as at Feb. 2.

?You will recall that prior to this outbreak, the last case of Avian influenza in poultry was confirmed in August 2008 during the last outbreak which commenced in January 2006,?? he said.

He said that during the outbreak, the Federal Government established a multi-sectoral response plan involving key government agencies and development partners.

He enjoined the public to maintain good hygiene and ensure regular hand wash to prevent infectious diseases.

?The public should avoid eating sick or dead birds as well as avoid unnecessary exposure to poultry facilities.

?The public should also report severe symptoms of respiratory illness to the nearest health facility, especially where there is a history of contact with sick poultry,? he said.

Alhassan said pandemic response plan had been concluded and activated over the influenza, adding that copies of the plan would be made available to all strategic partners, soon.

He also said that special public enlightenment messages had been prepared and would soon be released to the public.

Alhassan said all state Ministries of Health had been alerted on the outbreak and advised to reactivate their Avian Influenza Control mechanisms that were established during the last outbreak

Bird flu: Association urges FG to pay compensation to 339 farms

By Daily Post Staff on July 9, 2015
                            ...
?The ministry depopulated 1.5 million birds in 437 farms and one zoological garden in 18 states.

?Out of them, the Ministry paid compensation to 38 farms and one zoological garden leaving out 399 farms not compensated,?? he said

Edgar said that the payment of compensation to the remaining farms was critical toward eradicating the disease as it would encourage others to report fresh cases in their farms.
                            ...
?Since we have not yet eradicated the disease, it is possible some poultry farmers may experience the outbreak but will refuse to report such cases because of their past experiences in relating with government.??
                            ...
?In 2006, when we had an outbreak, it was curtailed and was eradicated. We can still do so,?? Edgar said.
                            ...
The Nigerian Veterinary Medical Association of Nigeria (NVMA) has urged the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to conclude its payment

Bird flu: 1.4 million birds destroyed

By NAN on July 12, 2015
                              ...
Ahmed said that the disease had subsided but ?certainly not over yet??.

?We are not taking anything for granted and have therefore gone into active surveillance.
                              ...
Ahmed said that the Federal Government was also carrying out forensic investigation to ascertain how the disease came in.

?We are forced to do that because what was diagnosed in NVRI laboratories is not related with previous cases, it is a new introduction all together,?? explained.

He said that there were many speculations with humans suspected to be possible carriers, while poultry importations could also be a source of disease dissemination.

Ahmed however, expressed happiness that no human case had been found, saying that people tested, including farm workers, proved negative.

More than 1.4 million birds were destroyed to stamp out bird influenza that hit poultry farms early this year, according to Dr. Mohammed Ahmed, the Executive Director, National Veterinary Research Institute, Vom. Ahmed told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), in Vom on Sunday, that 18 states were affected by the flu whose last case […]
