Case of avian flu in Niger: ''The situation is under control'', reassures the Ministry of Livestock

          January 4, 2023

Since the appearance of the avian flu epidemic in a rural commune of Bouza, the veterinary services have been mobilized by the Ministry of Livestock to contain the epidemic and stop it.

Thus, in a lively press briefing yesterday afternoon, relating to the detection of cases of avian flu, particularly in Bouza and Niamey, the Director General of Veterinary Services, Dr. Abdou Issiako reassures the population of the control of the situation.

The Director General of Veterinary Services recalled in his speech that on December 14, 2022, the local Private Veterinary Service of Bouza visited the village of Alloumoudou following deaths observed in poultry ordered by the NGO SAMARITAN'S PURES for assistance to vulnerable households in this village.

Dr Abdou Issiako to continue "on a first delivery of 4920 subjects out of the 11000 planned, all the poultry was decimated and that samples were thus taken and sent to the Central Livestock Laboratory of Niamey (LABOCEL), which confirmed the presence of the H5N1 virus, the causative agent of highly pathogenic avian influenza, on December 19, 2022”.

According to the same source, on December 20, 2022, a team from the Regional Livestock Directorate (DREL) of Tahoua went to the scene to carry out the first investigations, the mortalities began to be observed two weeks later. delivery, “According to the NGO, the market was the subject of a DAO and that the purchase must be made locally, but unfortunately the supplier got his supplies in Zinder. It is a question of supporting 5 villages of the rural commune of Karofane whose poultry was contaminated and decimated”.

Also, in the urban commune of Niamey, an outbreak was confirmed on December 19, 2022 in Goudel (1,000 hens) and another in Basra on December 25, 2022 (1,400 hens) with 2,400 subjects lost, announced Dr. Abdou Issiako.

Thus, according to the person in charge of veterinary services, the total gives a dead loss of 7,320 subjects due to disease and stamping-out and that "from December 24, 2022 to January 2, 2023, all the samples taken are negative”.

The Director General of Veterinary Services explains that orders declaring infection have been issued (Niamey and Bouza) by the administrative authorities. Also, all regions have been instructed to take control and increased surveillance measures as part of “ONE HEALTH” in order to block the spread of the disease.

In addition, the investigation continues to determine the true origin.

Dr. Abdou Issiako to let it be known that in the infected localities, measures must be taken, in particular the application without delay of the sanitary measures which are essential by the authorities and technical services; to prevent the outward and inward movement of poultry within infected localities, even at the level of poultry markets.

It also involves disinfecting equipment and chicken coops; to cut down all the sick subjects and bury them in a pit with a layer of quicklime. Create and set up a committee in charge of the census of all the households concerned by the mortality of poultry in the 5 villages, immediately stop the introduction of poultry in the department of Bouza by the NGO and finally reactivate the committee "ONE HEALTH » for a good management of the disease.

In 2020 at the same period, this disease caused poultry farmers to lose around one hundred thousand (100,000) subjects and on this occasion the government released around 370 million FCFCA to support these poultry farmers.
