Avian influenza responsible for the 50% increase of the price of eggs

According to producers, bird flu caused a drop in production of laying hens by almost 30%.

You may have noticed: the unit price of the egg on the retail market, which oscillated between 0.90 and 1 dirham, is now within a range between 1.40 and 1.5 dirham. This represents in some markets an increase in price of over 50%.

This is one of the impacts of avian flu that affects the national herd, declares Youssef Alaoui, a member of the Interprofessional Federation of the poultry sector in Morocco (FISA).

This disease was declared in Moroccan poultry flocks since almost a month. The spread of "bird flu H9 N2, has reduced the production of laying hens by 30%." Reassuringly for the consumer, however: this form of bird flu has no impact on human health, the source added.

This yield reduction impacts on the other hand the cost of production. For 100 laying hens that produced per day between 90 and 95 eggs during spawning peaks, the same livestock produces only 63 eggs on average per day, according to estimates.

To alleviate this situation, the Ministry of Health launched a call for tender for the vaccination of livestock. This egg laying ( "repro egg"), chickens Chicks ( "repro flesh") and turkey chicks ( "repro turkey").

The vaccination campaign is expected to begin in the coming weeks, according Alaoui, who adds that it can last from one to three months. The duration of treatment depends on the "degree of involvement by the disease of each laying and how it reacts to the vaccine," according to the same source. Once the volume of production returned to normal, egg prices should stabilize again around 1 dirham, secures our source.

Selon les producteurs, la grippe aviaire a provoqué une chute de production des poules pondeuses de près de 30 %.

The Federation also asserts that ONSSA closely monitoring the health situation of the sector and has set up a control plan based on strengthening biosecurity in poultry farms and poultry on a vaccination strategy.

H9N2 has existed for years in other countries (Germany, Tunisia, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, China, ...) and is managed according to the same source, in a controlled manner by the health authorities of these countries.
