The Ministry of Environment announces the registration of cases of bird flu in Mauritania (Statement)

"As part of the continuous monitoring of biological diversity at the level of the Jiaoling National Reserve, the governor of the reserve noticed on January 27, 2021, ten pelicans in the Gaoling Basin and 245 chicks of the same bird in addition to 12 adults of the same type at the level of the nesting site that entered the birds in the Basin area. Afotot Coastal is 50 km from the reserve and about 20 km from the nearest village in the municipality of Angako.
The same phenomenon has been observed on the left bank of the Senegal River (National Reserve for Dogs), which belongs to the central region - in addition to the Jaoling National Reserve - of the transboundary biosphere of the Senegal River delta, which has been classified by UNESCO since 2005.
Consequently, the Minister of Environment and Sustainable Development, Mrs. Maryam Bikai, contacted her colleagues in the government: the ministers of national defense, the interior and decentralization, health and rural development, in addition to the governor of Atarrazza, in order to coordinate the various measures to be taken on the ground.
A technical mission was formed under the supervision of the governor, and it went immediately to the site in order to diagnose the situation and take the necessary samples for analysis in the approved laboratories.
At the same time, the Minister of Environment gave the necessary instructions to take appropriate precautions for this situation in order to preserve the health of the citizens living in the vicinity of the reserve.
These measures are as follows:
The complete closure of the reserve in the face of visitors and the immediate cessation of all activities, including fishing and fruit picking
Formation of a sensitization committee, headed by the governor of Karamseen, which includes a representative of the municipality of Anjako, heads of security services, the governor of the reserve, representatives of the Ministry of Rural Development, local residents, fishermen, and civil society.
The launch of awareness campaigns for the reserve’s residents and workers about preventive measures
Provide the necessary tools necessary for the safe collection and disposal of dead birds
- Formation of a follow-up and evaluation committee headed by the governor of Karamseen, the mayor of Anjako, heads of security departments and the national reserve of Jaoling and the regional representative for rural development
Within the framework of the activities of the RBTDS Biosphere Reserve, consultation and exchange of information took place between the managers of the two national parks of Gaoling and Dogg about this phenomenon, as it was found that it is related to bird flu (Influenza, Type A, sous Type H5N1) according to the preliminary results of laboratory tests.
Finally, Mrs. Maryam Bikai called on the local population to be careful not to touch the carcasses of wild and poultry birds, and to inform the concerned services in the event of suspected infection of birds or the observation of the bodies.
