    Ghana's border under red alert

Accra (Gh) 07 April 2006 - Ghana's border with Burkina-Faso has been put on "red
alert" following the outbreak of Bird Flu in that country. Agriculture and veterinary
officials will now keep 24-hour surveillance on the borders to ensure that no birds are
    transported across the border.

Mr Ernest Debrah, Minister of Food and Agriculture, told the Times that District
Directorates of the Ministry had been tasked to intensify education for early detection and
prevention of the disease along the border towns.

Ghana shares frontiers with Burkina-Faso to the North at Hamile and Tumu in the Upper
West Region and Paga, Widana and Kulungungu in the Upper East Region. Dr Debrah
reiterated his appeal to Ghanaians to be alert and report any unusual disease occurrences
in poultry and other birds to the appropriate authorities for immediate action.
