Ivory Coast has difficulty in containing the epidemic of bird flu

By RFI Published on 05-09-2015 Changed at 05-09-2015 at 11:54 p.m.

In western Africa, while Ebola decreases, avian flu is rapidly spreading. Five countries are affected, including C?te d'Ivoire. In an attempt to contain the epidemic, the authorities are now forced to proceed to more and more slaughters of animals. 300 million CFA francs (over 450,000 euros) have just been released by FAO to try to eradicate the disease.

Despite preventive measures such as the ban on imports of poultry, disinfection of mass markets, nothing works. Cases of bird flu continue to multiply. Since six months and the onset of the first case in Ivory Coast, about thirty outbreaks of the disease have been identified.

For Dr. Essoh, from the Ivorian veterinary services, there is now urgency. New controls are introduced. "We are sure that the transport of poultry with vehicles that enter inside the farms, that return to the market and come back the farms, is the most important vector for the spread of the virus in the territory, he explains. So we changed our strategy. In a few days you will see that each bird has its "identity card" to be moved. "

To prevent spread, systematic slaughter is now needed in and around the outbreaks of avian flu. Nearly 40,000 birds have already been culled, their farmers compensated . Around a disease that affects animals but can be transmitted to humans, the fear is primarily sanitary, but also economic. In Ivory Coast, the poultry industry is major. Last year, 40 million poultry were raised for a turnover of 240 billion CFA francs (around ? 366 million).

"Safety and security don't just happen, they are the result of collective consensus and public investment. We owe our children, the most vulnerable citizens in our society, a life free of violence and fear."
    -Nelson Mandela
