Ivory Coast records isolated case of bird flu

    Friday ? November 24, 2006

An isolated case of bird flu has been discovered in turkeys in Ivory Coast, the first since the last outbreak in the capital six months ago, health authorities said.

"Results of samples ... from two turkeys that died November 9, made it possible to detect on November 17, an isolated case of avian flu caused by the H5N1 virus," the livestock production ministry said in a statement.

The tests were carried out at a veterinary laboratory in Bingerville, near Abidjan.

The two turkeys came from a livestock camp on a village on the outskirts of Abidjan.

Health and sanitary measures have been put in place and people exposed to the birds are under medical supervision, said government.

The Ivorian government announced in early September the end of a ban on poultry imports that it imposed in May after bird flu was discovered near the economic capital Abidjan.

After containing the outbreak in June, the government authorized the reopening of the city's poultry markets shut since May.

To eradicate the virus, a large-scale disinfection of affected poultry farms, slaughter houses and the market itself was carried out.

Some 2,000 domestic fowls were culled and authorities ordered 12 million doses of animal vaccine to halt the spread of the H5N1 strain of bird flu. The strain is consistently lethal to birds and has also killed more than 150 people worldwide since late 2003.

The Ivory Coast's poultry sector counts some 30 million fowl, generates more than 60 million euros (78 million dollars) in revenue, and employs 15,000 people. ? AFP

An isolated case? I doubt it.

It's isolated because the neighbors are lying (or not trying very hard to detect H5N1).

Snip from Reuters (Africa must join fight against bird flu-WHO):

Ivory Coast declared a new outbreak of the deadly H5N1 strain of bird flu on Thursday, the first in the West African country since it was first detected there in April.

Two turkeys from a flock of 20 were found dead on Nov. 9 in Abatta, a lagoon-side village on the outskirts of the economic capital Abidjan. Around eight more died over the next few days, a government veterinary official said.

"We are trying to make sure this case doesn't spread and we are compensating owners of birds as we cull," Dr. Yao N'Dri, regional director of animal and fishery resources, told Reuters.

Poultry outside the 3 km perimeter and in Abidjan would be vaccinated, he said.

Demand for chicken plummeted in war-divided Ivory Coast when the first cases of the virus were detected in April, although an Abidjan disc jockey, DJ Lewis, quickly shot to fame by inventing a catchy bird flu song and dance making light of the disease.

          Re: Ivory Coast--H5N1 detected again

Ivory Coast is definitely in the the Western Europe and Eastern USA flyway.
The big circular flight map posted here and in FC long ago shows clearly the direction those wild birds are now taking.

There's no question that this clade, recombined, will end up in Western Europe in a few months max and on the Eastern Seaboard of the USA.

So, hello out there CDC. It's time to wake up America and tell them truly what window of time there is to prepare, based on this clade alone.

But, alas, in their conservative approach to reality, which means CYA for every bureaocrat, nothing will be done now, and we can expect shock and surprise that H5N1 arrived in the USA, within what? 1 month? 6 months? 1 year?

The virus has crossed from East Africa to West Africa very early in the migration season. So, hello bird flu. Welcome to the Good Ole' USA.

I addition to the flyways GR mentions, there are some birds fying east/west. The Northern Wheatear (o.,o.) winters in Ivory Coast, Gambia, etc., then crosses Libya, Turkey, Armenia, eventually making its way to the northern areas of North America - Alaska, Yukon, & Northwest Territories. This one bird amazes me - it crosses all but 2 flyways in a few months - twice a year!
