The Cameroonian poultry sector is again shaken by a health crisis, linked to the appearance of the H5N1 avian flu, announced the Ministry of Livestock.

According to the ministry, it is in the locality of Bamougoum in the Western region, the largest poultry production area in the country, that avian flu struck.

"Following this situation, we signed an order instituting urgent measures to prevent the spread in the country," the Minister in charge of Livestock, Dr Taiga, told Anadolu Agency on Tuesday.

"Among these measures, there is the implementation of emergency stamping-out operations in the identified foci, their destruction by incineration and burial under the control of the heads of the veterinary services with the support of the peacekeeping forces. order," he said.

The Ministry of Livestock has, moreover, prescribed the erection of the sanitary barrier at the level of poultry farms, with prohibition of access to any unauthorized person, during the period of the conduct of sanitary slaughter and disinfection operations. homes by special teams.

As a reminder, the last epizootics of the H5N1 virus were discovered in Yaoundé in a poultry complex on May 22, 2016.

It all started with an alert following high poultry mortality observed at the Mvog-Betsi poultry complex; more than 15,000 deaths out of nearly 33,000 poultry in this herd.

Following this observation, measures had been taken to contain the disease, the rest of the herd had been slaughtered.

Avian flu was detected 15 years ago in Cameroon, more specifically in a duck farmed in the town of Maroua in the Far North region of the country.

Cameroon was thus the fourth African country affected by avian flu.
