    COMMUNICATION ON THE REPORTED POULTRY MORTALITIES
    AT THE COMPLEXE AVICOLE DE MVOG-BETSI IN YAOUNDE.

    On Sunday 22 May 2016, the Epidemiosurveillance Network of the
    Ministry of Livestock, Fisheries and Animal Industries noticed an
    abnormally high mortality rate at the Complexe Avicole de Mvogbetsi,
    in Yaound?.

    Current estimated mortality is estimated at 24000 out of 33000, for a
    mortality rate of about 75%.

    Faced with this delicate situation, the Government applied a number
    of measures aimed at containing the outbreak and limiting the spread
    of the disease. These include amongst others :
    - Proscribing access to the site to strangers;
    - Banning entry and exit of livestock products to the site;
    - Slaughter of the remaining birds on the farm ;
    - Incineration and burial of all carcasses in conformity with the law
    in force;
    - Control of movement of susceptible domestic species and humans
    in the zone ;
    - Daily visits of veterinary and medical staff to the site;
    - Disinfection of buildings, vehicle tracks and other fomites
    capable of contaminating susceptible species ;
    - Constitution of an emergency stock of anti-viral drugs
    (TAMIFLU) and individual protective equipment ;
    - Investigation and monitoring of persons having visited the farm or
    carried out commercial activities with the farm during the week of
    the 15th to the 22nd of May 2016.

    Investigations and laboratory results indicate high suspicion of H5
    avian influenza and analyses on the N antigen are on-going.

    It is what noting that an interministerial platform was created since
    2012, the National Program for the Prevention and Fight against
    Emerging and Reemerging Zoonoses, under the authority of the Prime
    Minister and Head of Government which regroups the ministries
    incharge of wildlife, the environment, human and animal health
    amongst others.

    Through this Program, the Government elaborated and validated an
    integrated multisectoral contingency plan for avian influenza in April
    2016.
    Aimed at controlling avian influenza in Cameroon, the integrated
    multisectoral contingency plan has five strategic axes:
    - Epidemiological surveillance ;
    - Prevention and biosecurity ;
    - Health systems response ;
    - Operational research ;
    - Sensitization and communication.

    The Government wishes to inform the national and international
    opinion that there has been no human case reported so far.
    The only
    case reported so far is that of the Complexe Avicole de Mvog-Betsi in
    Yaound?, the situation is under control and investigations are ongoing.

    The Government calls on poultry farmers to be vigilant and asks them
    to signal all suspicious mortalities in their farms to the veterinary
    services.

      Bird Flu Hits Cameroon Again, Kills 15000 Fowls In Yaounde
      Posted: 4:40 am, May 27, 2016

      By Nformi Sonde Kinsai & Etienne Mainimo Mengnjo

      The highly pathogenous type H5 Bird Flu influenza has been reported in Cameroon. The confirmation of the presence of the virus is contained in a laboratory test conducted by the Yaounde annex office of the National Veterinary Laboratory known by its French acronym as LANAVET.

      The test was conducted following the massive death of over 15000 fowls in a poultry of about 20,000 capacity carrying chicks within three days at the Mvog-Betsi Poultry Complex located in the Yaounde VI District.

      The poultry complex is specialised in the production and sale of day-old chicks. According to a report dated May 24, highlighting results of analysis placed under diagnosis No 037/2016 conducted on 36 samples of carcases of the dead fowls, signed by the Director of LANAVET, Dr. Abel Wads, 15,000 dead fowls were recorded between Friday May 20 and Monday 23.

            Bird flu: Chickens and countertops destroyed in Ebolowa

            Thursday Jun 2 2016
            Written by Roger Takala

            It was during a punch operation in the night of Tuesday, May 31, 2016 the chicken market

            Ebolowa Central Market chicken sellers are desperate. Their sector is in tatters. Debris boards by one, pieces of sheet metal there, there is nothing left over. All counters and other chickens traders accessories were demolished by a committee of local officials, accompanied by law enforcement forces. Apart from these displays, chickens seized at the origin of this approach were also incinerated.

            This operation which occurs after an awareness meeting conducted just hours before their descent on the ground at night is badly perceived by traders, sources said. "That's really being mean. What is the counter you could simply disinfect where quarantine has to do with the destruction of chickens "asks a seller of chickens.

            "The destruction of chickens agree, but not the counters, it's a double loss for us traders. How are we going to pay off our loans and pay school our children, even though the wind of bird flu would have happened "asked another vendor who said he lost 350 chickens.

            For others, it's a crawl space that was to be imposed on all. Especially that is running supplies to those in chickens in Yaounde who had dead chickens, not those bred in Ebolowa. They do not understand this persecution. A Mvog Beti where the bird flu has triggered, is that buildings and other livestock machinery were destroyed?

            At the Regional Delegation of Livestock Fisheries and Animal Industries, executives of this administration were silent. Given what is happening in Ebolowa, we just conclude that avian influenza is well and truly present in Ebolowa.

              Embassy of France in Yaounde

              Information concerning the avian flu

              The Cameroonian authorities have confirmed May 25 that a bird flu outbreak was detected in poultry complex Mvog-Betsi in Yaounde. The entire herd was slaughtered and the carcasses are being incineration and landfill. Cases of bird flu have also been reported in Ebolowa (South). The sale of poultry was banned throughout the Mfoundi Division (Yaound?) beginning May 26 and in the department of Mvila (Ebolowa) as of May 31 No cases of transmission to humans has so far been declared.

              Laboratory tests confirmed that it was a bird flu strain A (H5N1), potentially transmissible to humans by direct or indirect contact with live or dead infected birds. It is recommended to avoid handling sick or dead birds - report them to authorities immediately by calling 1510 -; limit visits to poultry farms, poultry markets; cook poultry well, the eggs before eating. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), there are no data tending to prove that the disease can be transmitted to humans through properly cooked food.

              Les virus de la grippe de type A sont classés en sous-types selon les combinaisons de protéines se trouvant à leur surface. Quand ils touchent les animaux, les virus de la grippe animale sont désignés en fonction de l’espèce hôte, par exemple les virus de la grippe aviaire, les virus de la grippe porcine, les virus de la grippe équine, les virus de la grippe canine, etc.
