    Epizooties: Strengthening Prevention

The Minister of Agriculture, Kossi Messan Ewovor, on Monday opened a briefing devoted to safety in the WAEMU area. Are concerned, all those involved in managing the flow of trade in animals: veterinary, customs, wholesalers, etc. ...

In 2008, Togo has been affected by avian influenza requiring the slaughter of thousands of poultry in parts of the country.

As part of the fight against animal epidemics, the government has implemented a policy of monitoring, inspection and sanitary control, including land and sea borders.

The diseases may be responsible for considerable economic loss: dead animals, of course, but also losses in animal production (weight loss, drop in lactation, nesting ...) and major obstacles to trade in animals, with closed borders when an outbreak of an epidemic.

For this reason, most of them are subject to the control or prevention, coordinated internationally. In these economic losses is sometimes compounded the danger to public health. Fortunately, most of these diseases are zoonoses (that is to say animal diseases transmissible to humans), or zoonoses are minor

According to figures released by the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, the production of cattle, sheep, goats, pigs and poultry was in 2009, respectively: 307,500 units 3527, 308,450 and 1.3878.000

Livestock contributes 20% to agricultural GDP and covers about 70% of animal protein needs of the population.

The workshop is organized in collaboration with the Economic and Monetary Union of West Africa (UEMOA).
