Live-Stock farmers, extension workers and other stakeholders in the agricultural sector in the Southern Province over the weekend benefited from a two-day sensitization workshop on the causes, prevention and control of the bird flu disease at the One World Link Hall, Mattru Road in the provincial headquarter city of Bo. It was organized by the Live-Stock Department of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security.

Declaring the workshop open, the Senior Live-Stock Officer of the ministry, Dr. Mohamed Barrie informed participants of the essence of organizing such a workshop. He said with a looming threat of the epidemic in the country, it was but prudent to educate all stakeholders on the need to be au fait with the causes, methods of prevention and control of the disease.

Dr. Barrie disclosed that the disease?s transmission rate has increased tremendously over the years in most of the continents, including Africa. In Sierra Leone?s case, he said the threat of the epidemic is gradually becoming a cause for concern. He noted that though transmission from human to human has not yet been established, extension workers and farmers need to know how the disease is infected and spread. According to the Live- Stock Officer, out of forty-three (43) reported cases in Africa, eighteen (18) birds died of the disease last year.

On his part, the Health Education Manager South Mr. Sahr Hemour implored participants to put into practice the knowledge acquired from the two-day exercise by helping disseminate the information to community people in their various localities. He cautioned them against keeping silence on any suspected case, and to report such cases immediately to his division, which he said is responsible for the dissemination of accurate and current health information on animal husbandry.

The field education officer, Mr. Lansana Conteh admonished the public to help prevent the spread of the disease by always keeping children away from sick or dead birds, as well as poultry farms, and to also report dead birds from poultries to the nearest health centre. He said that would serve as a precautionary measure since there is no vaccine to prevent humans from contracting the virus.
