    Sierra Leone: Country Free of Bird Flu-Director of Livestock

    Director of Livestock Services in the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security has in a recent statement allayed public fears that there has been an outbreak of bird flu in Sierra Leone.

    Director of Livestock Services in the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security has in a recent statement allayed public fears that there has been an outbreak of bird flu in Sierra Leone.

    Francis Sankoh stated at three-day simulation training on containment and prevention of bird flu organized by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in Accra, Ghana that the Sierra Leone government has put in place contingency plans in readiness of any eventuality.

    "A national strategy was drawn and several trainings have been conducted for veterinary and public health workers including members of the armed forces and civil society," he said.

    Communications Specialist, Live Stock Services, Brima Samura said his unit have conducted lots of sensitization programmes. "People will not treat the disease with seriousness especially when there has not been any recorded incident of the disease in Sierra Leone," Samura said.


    He stated that the desk top models o the three countries that have experienced the disease, were used during the training.

    Participants were also taught how to handle emergency cases.

    Ghana has recorded three incidents of the flu, while Benin, Nigeria and Ivory Coast have all experienced the outbreak.
