</TD></TR><TR><TD> </TD></TR><TR><TD class=text>?We are assembling the superintendents, health officers, Agricultural officers, surveillance officers, and customs officers from Bong, Lofa, and Nimba Counties to raise their awareness about Avian Influenza and strengthen the capacity of County Avian Influenza Task Forces,? said Agriculture Minister Dr. J. Christopher Toe, Chairman of the National Task Force on the Control and Prevention of Avian Influenza.
He added ?While there have been no confirmed cases of Avian Influenza in Liberia, the virus is on the Continent of Africa and it is present in Cote d?Ivoire, so all out people must therefore remain vigilant.?
According to a Ministry of Agriculture statement, facilitators at the workshop include officials from the Ministries of Agriculture; health and Social Welfare; Internal Affairs; Information, Tourism, and Culture; the bureau of Immigration; the Foundation for International Dignity (FIND); WHO; FAO; and UNICEF. UNMIL, UNHCR, and other partners are providing technical assistance. Major funding for the workshop is being provided by UNICEF.
?One program of the national Task Force is to bring this training and capacity building to all 15 counties and when we complete the Gbarnga workshop, we will have reached 10 counties.
With thanks to partners like UNICEF, we are on course to train all 15 counties Avian Influenza Task Forces by the end of October,? said Minister Toe.
Following the Avian Influenza sessions, workshop participants will receive two days of training in cholera and diarrhea awareness and information on Lesser Fever. The Ministry of Health and Social Welfare will help lead these sessions, the statement said and added that major funding for the cholera and diarrhea and Lassa fever workshop is also provided by UNICEF.
Messages to reduce the risk from Avian Influenza are ?Seeking immediate treatment from your local clinic if you have fever after being in contact with sick or dead poultry; reporting sick or dead birds to the local authorities, and keeping birds away from children and living areas.
Others include not sleeping with chickens, not entering the country with a box of chickens, keeping poultry away from wild birds and separate species, separating species helps prevent transmission, especially from wild birds and washing your hands of ten with soap and water, especially after handling birds.
According to the Task Force, other messages Liberians needed to know are cooking or preparing poultry products before eating, cooking well all poultry products, making sure the yolk and white of the egg are hard when you cook eggs, keeping raw poultry and eggs away from other foods, keeping yourself and your poultry away from water and feed that can be attacked by wild birds and do not trade birds of unknown origin unless there is certificate of a reference source that they are free from Avian Influenza.
The Government of the Republic of Liberia, through the National Task Force, has opened four Avian Influenza telephone hotlines and urges citizens to use the service only to report cases of dead birds.
