KENYA: Sh142m TO FIGHT AVIAN FLU VIRUS
By Elizabeth Mwai (The East African Standard)
June 24, 2006. Posted to the web June 26, 2006

NAIROBI - Kenya has received Sh142 million from the Department for International Development to prepare for a possible Avian flu virus outbreak.

Although no cases of Bird Flu have been reported in Kenya, experts fear that such outbreak could spell doom for Kenya.

The head of DFiD Kenya, Simon Bland, said the money, which will be managed by Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) would enable Kenya minimise the spread of the influenza should it occur. The funds will be used to strengthen capacity of the Government and communities for early warning and early diagnosis of avian flu. Bland said the money would be utilised in enhancing communication and creating public awareness.

"Work will also be undertaken to assess the socio-economic impact of avian flu," Bland said.

He said it was necessary to refine the emergency preparedness plans to counter the threat.

Since February 2006, at least seven African nations have reported confirmed cases of the virus.
