Kenyan Health Official Urges Continued Sensitization on Bird Flu
Posted on: Tuesday, 20 May 2008, 06:00 CDT

Excerpt from report by Kenyan private Kiss FM radio on 20 May

Kenyans have been put on high alert over the threat of Avian influenza or bird flu to their poultry and health.

Public health officials say an outbreak of the flu which has been reported in many Asian countries, is imminent if farmers and the public are not made aware of the disease and the danger it poses to their lives.

John Murugura of the Ministry of Public Health and Sanitation says the threat is long term and ample preparations should therefore be made to counter it.

No cases of bird flu have ever been noted in Kenya.

[Murugura] We need to sustain some level of awareness because our neighbours were reporting outbreaks of AI in poultry industry.
As you are aware a number of countries also have reported AI in humans. So we had a challenge of sustaining reassuring people and imploring them to take, to know they can reduce the risk, the risk still exists, and therefore they should be on guard all the time.
