Gambia: EC gives Gambia 300,000 euros to fight avian influenza

The European Commission ha s given Gambia 300,000 euros to fight avian influenza, Dr. Kebba Daffeh, acting director of veterinary services, and project coordinator of Support Programme of Integrated National Action Plan Against Avian and Human Influenza (SPINAP), said on Wednesday.
Speaking to PANA in an interview, he said the fund would strengthen national capacity to prevent and control avian influenza (bird flu) outbreak.
Dr Daffeh also said SPINAP was a three-year regional project being executed by the African Union and Inter-African Bureau for Animal Resource with funding from the European Commission.
According to him, the SPINAP project was developed in response to escalating global threat of avian influenza adding that is one of the major Pan-African efforts to combat avian influenza.
Dr Daffeh pointed out that the project aims at contributing to the reduction of the potential socio-economic impact and loss of human lives resulting from avian influenza in 47 African ACP countries.
He noted that this could be achieved through financial and technical support to enable the participating countries prevent outbreak and ensure speedy containment where infection occurs.
