FAO to help Gabon draft emergency plan to curb bird flu

Libreville (Gabon) The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) will help Gabon draft an emergency plan to curb the avian flu, FAO regional representative Bangoura Sourakata said here on Tuesday.

He said FAO has already made available to the Gabonese agriculture ministry financial resources to start the warning system, which involves training staff on laboratory diagnosis and monitoring the epidemic.

Development partners such as the European Union and the African Development Bank have been involved in this plan, which was drafted soon after the bird flu outbreak in Africa although no case has been reported in Gabon.

In 2005, the Gabonese government banned poultry imports from France, Asia, Nigeria and neighbouring Cameroon to prevent the epidemic, which was rife in several countries.

The ban was lifted a few years later.
