</td> </tr> </tbody></table> Massawa, 31 January 2007 ? The branch office of the Ministry of Heath in the Northern Red Sea region, held a discussion in the port city of Massawa regarding the prevention of bird flu.

The head of social services at the regional administration, Mr. Tesfai Tekle, said that the discussion is aimed at making preliminary arrangements to prevent the spread of bird flu as it has been witnessed in neighboring countries through disseminating information to the public on the dangers of the flu.

According to records of the1960s, there are over 537 types of birds and that 231 of these migrate to Eritrea regularly.

The head of family and community health in the Ministry, Dr. Zemuy Alemu, noted that extreme precaution measures need to be taken as the birds migrate to Eritrea from mid-September to mid-November. He further indicated that the bird flu can also be dangerous to humans and that once that is the case it could be difficult to control. He added that the case has not yet been witnessed in Eritrea but in case it does so all concerned bodies should be informed on time.

Dr. Zemuy also called on poultry farmers to take the necessary precautions.
