Bird Flu: FG, W?Bank Pay N631m to Farmers
By Ndubuisi Ugah with agency reports, 11.15.2008

The Federal Government and World Bank have paid N630.9 million as compensation between February 2006 and October 31 this year to 3,037 farmers, who were affected by the bird flu outbreaks.
Component Coordinator, Avian Influenza Communication, Mr Banji Akeredolu, said in Abuja, that 1,264,191 birds were depopulated in the 97 local government areas across the 26 states that were affected.
He quoted the latest World Health Organisation (WHO) report on human H5N1 cases and deaths as saying that more than 383 cases and 241 deaths had been recorded since 2003.
?Indonesia recorded 108 deaths, 133 cases, the highest so far, and Nigeria one death,?? he said.
It would be recalled that stakeholders in the poultry industry had earlier on converge on Abuja, for a three-day Global Consultative Forum on the Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI).
The forum, according to the organisers, was aimed at creating a road map for the revitalisation of the poultry industry.
Under the theme ?The Control of HPAI in Nigeria?, the forum provided the platform for Nigeria to share its experience on the control and prevention of HPAI.
It also facilitated networking among African countries on disease reporting, communication and prevention and the need to provide inputs for evidence based emergency preparedness plan.
