Despite the efforts undertaken by the government over the past four months, with the aim of improving the working conditions of health personnel and ensuring better treatment for the sick, the African Development Bank (AfDB) believes that Gabon's capacity to diagnose and manage cases of Covid-19 remains insufficient. The country is among the most ill-equipped and least well-prepared on the continent.

If the President of the Republic, from the start of the coronavirus epidemic, had maintained that Gabon’s health system was prepared to face it. In reality, this is not the case. While the country registered its first Covid-19 case on March 12, 2020, almost four months later, and despite the government's efforts to manage the health crisis, the AfDB still ranks it among the most ill-equipped and least prepared to deal with coronavirus.

In its recently published Economic Outlook (supplement 2020) report, the Bank indicates that Gabon, ranked 186th in the world by the 2019 World Health Security Index which covers 195 countries, has not improved its "very low score of 20 out of 100 ". To the point that, faced with the pandemic, "the country's capacity to diagnose and manage the cases of Covid-19 is insufficient," fears the banking institution.

The Bank also recalls that the case of Gabon also worries WHO. The UN organization believes that "Covid-19 presents a high risk for Gabon given the low capacity of its health system, the lack of equipment necessary to fight the pandemic, poor hygienic conditions and of life, and the overpopulation of big cities ”.

According to the AfDB, "only 21 of the 54 African countries are classified as being better prepared from a clinical point of view to face the epidemic threats with global repercussions, with scores ranging between 33.3 and 66.6 points" . Gabon is one of the 33 other African countries which are ill-equipped and less well prepared.
