Coronavirus: Gabon registers its first case

post by Griffin Ondo Nzuey /March 12, 2020

After Cameroon and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Gabon is the third country in central Africa affected by the coronavirus. The government announced this Thursday, March 12, having detected a positive case for the pandemic.

Despite a battery of preventive measures announced in recent weeks, Gabon has not escaped the coronavirus pandemic. The government announced on Thursday that it had registered a positive test case for Covid-19. This is a 27 year old Gabonese who arrived in the country on March 8 from Bordeaux, France, where he stayed for some time, says Edgar Anicet Mboumbou Miyakou.

The Minister of Communication also specifies that the state of health of the person concerned is gradually improving.

In his report made Wednesday to the political parties he had invited to an information meeting, the Prime Minister admitted that 30 cases had been judged suspicious in recent days, among the 21,600 passengers flashed at the airport and the 206 people flashed at the pot port of Owendo. But Julien Nkoghe Bekale also assured that, until March 11, following verifications made by experts, notably at CIRMF, none of these suspect cases had been tested positive for Covid-19.

Covid-19: A 7th positive case declared in Gabon in less than 2 weeks
post by Griffin Ondo Nzuey / March 25, 2020

Less than two weeks after the discovery of the first case, Gabon announced on Wednesday March 25 that it had registered a new person who tested positive for Covid-19. The country therefore now has 7 cases, including one death since March 12 last.

No more a week goes by without new people who test positive for Covid-19 being registered in Gabon, where drastic measures have been taken in recent weeks to limit the spread of the disease as far as possible across the country. This Wednesday, the Monitoring and Response Committee to the coronavirus pandemic in Gabon announced that it had registered a new positive case controlled by the virus. This brings to 7 the number of people who officially contracted the disease, one of whom died on March 20 in Libreville.

On the occasion of his press briefing, Dr Guy Patrick Obiang Ndong clarified that this 7th case is a 52-year-old Central African national who returned to Gabon on March 15 by a flight by Air France. Having presented no abnormalities upon arrival at Leon Mba Libreville International Airport, it was only a few days after his trip that the patient experienced the symptoms of the illness (fever and cough).

Thanks to his presence of mind and faced with the persistence of symptoms, the 52-year-old called 1410. For the past few days, he has been treated at the Akanda military hospital, said the deputy coordinator of the Monitoring and response committee against the coronavirus pandemic in Gabon.

Covid-19: No new positive case in Gabon for 4 days
            By Albertine Ondo -
            March 29, 2020
Libreville, the capital of Gabon @ DR

This was stated by Dr. Guy-Patrick Obiang Ndong at the 11th press conference of the Steering Committee for the watch and response plan against the coronavirus epidemic this Sunday, March 29.

To date, Gabon still has 7 patients infected with Covid-19 for a single death.

The last positive case in the country was tested last Wednesday.

The situation is therefore, to date, stable on the epidemiological level. "The kinetics of the epidemic (its dynamics) is therefore contained," said a WHO expert in the country.

In addition, 269 screening tests were performed, including 201 negative, said Dr Obiang Ndong.

More information to come on this in the coming hours.
