Marrakech: a virus from spoiled eggs causing collective food poisoning

    22 hours ago 0223

Investigations by security authorities in Marrakech have revealed the causes of the deaths of five people from food poisoning after consuming fast meals at a snack bar in the Mahamid district of the Red City last week.

Analyzes carried out on samples of the dishes served by the said establishment revealed that the food poisoning, which affected 28 people, was due to a virus resulting from eggs used in the snack dishes.

Investigations followed the threads of the case, confirming that the owner of the snack bar, currently in detention, was buying eggs from a horse-drawn cart in the Mahamid neighborhood, before discovering that the wholesaler who sold these eggs was buying from a farm on the outskirts of Marrakech.

The investigation also revealed that the owner of the snack bar concerned had no permit to carry out his activity and only worked in the evening, thus avoiding the checks usually carried out during the day.

Video The death toll from food poisoning in a fast-food restaurant in the M'hamid district of Marrakech now stands at six, following the death of a little girl on Tuesday May 7. An investigation is underway to elucidate the circumstances of this tragedy.

On April 29, the Arrazi hospital in Marrakech saw its emergency services overwhelmed by the influx of 26 patients, all victims of severe food poisoning. Despite the efforts of doctors and nurses, six people succumbed to symptoms of poisoning, leaving behind grieving families and an entire city in shock.

The authorities quickly identified a fast-food restaurant in the M'hamid district as a potential source of this poisoning. Testimonies from survivors have pointed the finger at the sandwiches and meals served by this establishment, prompting an in-depth investigation into its compliance with health and hygiene standards. The owner of the said restaurant was placed in pre-trial detention.

“ We had five tortilla sandwiches, topped with potatoes, eggs, rice and mayonnaise. When we returned home, the first signs of discomfort began to appear. Abdominal pains assailed us, but that was only the beginning. My children retched and started vomiting ,” says Safae Karouane, a survivor of the tragedy.

And to continue: “ In an emergency, I took my children to Ibn Zohr hospital. My children were admitted and spent four days under close medical supervision. Today, they are doing better, hamdoullah. But for my husband and I, the after-effects persist in the form of a stubborn fatigue that refuses to leave us .”

The residents of the neighborhood, also in shock, struggle to understand how such a popular and famous place could have been the center of such a tragedy. “ This place is very busy and no similar incidents have been reported before ,” says Abdelilah Souka, a resident of the town. “ We have been eating here for a long time and we don’t understand what could have happened, ” says Youssef Stitou, another resident, perplexed.

The fast food restaurant in question is renowned for its wide choice of dishes, including grilled meats, pizzas and other sandwiches. Customers have been flocking there for years, attracted by the variety and accessibility of the dishes. However, this popularity is now tarnished by the tragedy which has just shaken the ocher city.

To prevent such a tragedy from happening again in the future, the National Food Safety Office (ONSSA) is now carrying out a vast inspection campaign of snacks and butchers in the city.

Supervised by a joint committee, made up of representatives of local authorities, the economic affairs department of the wilaya of the Marrakech-Safi region, and ONSSA, these operations have already led to the closure of several establishments and the confiscation rotten meat and food.

Some of these establishments did not comply with health safety standards, while others operated illegally without authorization. Warnings have also been issued to some snack shops, urging them to change their cooking utensils and improve food storage conditions. To be continued...

Food poisoning in Marrakech: The Municipal Council in action

    Zaina Jnina
    Thursday May 23, 2024 - 12:30

The tragedy of food poisoning in a fast-food restaurant in the M'hamid district of Marrakech, which claimed the lives of six people, has highlighted the urgent need to rethink and strengthen safety protocols, in order to prevent recurrence such tragedies and to protect public health with increased vigilance.

On April 29, the emergency services of the Arrazi hospital in Marrakech were overwhelmed by the mass arrival of 26 patients suffering from very serious food poisoning. The virulent symptoms of this relentless poisoning unfortunately led to the death of six people, including a little girl, casting a dark and heavy shadow over the entire city of Marrakech.

In the wake of this tragedy, joint committees deployed a vast campaign to control catering establishments in the ocher city. As a result, dozens of businesses were closed, inspections having revealed the unsanitary nature of the food products used and offered to consumers.

In addition, the Council of the Municipality of Marrakech has taken drastic administrative measures. The delegation of the preventive health sector, previously held by Khadija Boukhrachi, fourth deputy of the Mayor, was withdrawn and reassigned to the seventh deputy, Mohamed Toufella, a reshuffle aimed at further strengthening the vigilance and effectiveness of health control at the within the ocher city.

Additionally, six Council members filed a formal request to include specific items regarding this issue. Through this proposal, members aspire to initiate a debate within the Council, in order to design mechanisms and proposals capable of preventing the recurrence of such tragedies. The objective is to put in place proactive measures to protect the lives of citizens and guarantee food security in the tourist city.

The six members of the council also plan to shake up the health management of catering establishments in Marrakech with bold proposals. One of their key ideas is to establish a detailed health file for each restaurant and food outlet. This file would be a mine of information, containing employee identity cards, their legal status and the health status of the establishment itself.

At each inspection, it would be imperative to record the report of this mission in this single file. Thus, this process would allow rigorous and constant monitoring, ensuring that the necessary sanctions are taken before tragedies occur, thus preserving the lives of citizens.

At the same time, the six members wish to revitalize the health offices of the five districts of the city, with a view to strengthening the proximity and effectiveness of interactions with residents, guaranteeing that each office fully assumes its responsibilities in terms of public health.

It should be noted that the court of first instance of Marrakech has set the fourth session of the trial for next Wednesday to examine the results of the medical expertise concerning the real cause of the victims' deaths.
