North Kivu: displaced people affected by respiratory and diarrheal diseases in Kanyarutshinya (MSF)

Several cases of respiratory and diarrheal diseases have been reported in the Kanyarutshinya IDP sites, near Goma (North Kivu).

According to Le Juste Lurhakwa, field coordinator of the organization Doctors Without Borders (MSF)/Belgium, Goma office which alerts, “these displaced people are affected by respiratory diseases because they have no shelter. Most spend the night under the stars, the others are in schools, in churches; therefore in conditions where they are exposed to bad weather day and night. Diarrheal diseases are linked to the lack of latrines''.

The Just Lurhakwa says his organization is supporting the Kanyaruchinya health center to facilitate free access to health care for displaced people, indigenous people and those affected by last year's volcano.

Since the influx of these new displaced persons, he said, this centre, which received around 70 people daily, now receives at least 250 each day, mostly with respiratory and diarrheal diseases:

''They (the displaced) were using the school and church toilets but obviously all these toilets are already full. So, you will even see everywhere if you go to the sites, you will see that children, sometimes even adults, defecate in nature''.

For the field coordinator of the organization Médecins sans frontières (MSF)/Belgium, Goma office, the risk of an explosion of diarrheal diseases and other epidemics such as measles because of this promiscuity and these poor living conditions they are exposed.

To prevent the spread of diarrheal diseases in the various sites hosting these displaced persons, MSF/Belgium proposes that these people be relocated from schools to be located in places where they are safe from bad weather.

Also, they already distribute 200,000 liters of drinking water every day on six sites. This organization pleads for the rapid construction of latrines for the displaced.
