Location: Western Region, Uganda




Event: The U.S. Embassy is aware there are reports of a potential case of Marburg Virus Disease, a viral hemorrhagic fever, in western Uganda. The measures to protect yourself are the same as for any viral hemorrhagic fever, such as Ebola Bundibugyo Virus Disease.

The Marburg virus is transmitted through:

• Direct contact with blood or other bodily fluids from a person with the infection.
• Direct contact (handling or washing) of an infected corpse.
• Contact with objects that have been in contact with infected secretions.

Please refer to the Ministry of Health’s website for information as it becomes available: Ministry of Health – Uganda

Actions to Take:

• Visit the CDC’s website for information on Marburg virus disease.
• Visit the CDC Travelers’ Health Page for Uganda , which includes information on Marburg virus disease.
• If at risk, alert your healthcare provider if you are experiencing symptoms similar to Ebola to receive guidance prior to presenting for care.
• Continue to take malaria prophylaxis as recommended, as the symptoms of malaria can mimic symptoms of any viral hemorrhagic fever, including Marburg, leading to preventable health scares.
• Monitor your health for 21 days following travel if you traveled to an area experiencing an Ebola or Marburg outbreak.
• Review the U.S. Embassy country page for general health information.
• Refer to the Embassy’s list of medical providers.
• Check with your travel insurance provider about medical evacuation options should you fall ill while overseas.

Suspected Marburg outbreak in Uganda prompts US alert

Reports of a potential case of the haemorrhagic fever come as Kampala battles to stop the spread of Ebola

The US embassy in Uganda has issued an alert over reports of a potential Marburg case in the country’s western region.

As of Tuesday, Uganda’s health ministry had yet to release any information on the suspected outbreak, which remains unconfirmed.

Uganda has extensive experience with dealing with outbreaks of haemorrhagic fevers and last reported a Marburg outbreak in 2017, when there were four cases and three deaths.

The country has previously sought to downplay the impact of haemorrhagic fever outbreaks in effort to protect its burgeoning tourism industry.

A message on the health ministry’s homepage, just beneath a link to its dashboard tracking the spread of Ebola, reads: “Ministry of Health is in control. No need for panic. Uganda is safe!”

Africa CDC says Uganda found isolated Marburg case

NAIROBI, July 1 (Reuters) - Africa's top public health agency said on Wednesday that Ugandan health authorities had confirmed an isolated case of Marburg virus disease, a highly infectious hemorrhagic fever, while conducting surveillance for the country's Ebola outbreak.

A spokesperson for the Africa Centres for Disease ⁠Control and Prevention added that according to Uganda no contacts of the Marburg case had developed symptoms and there was currently no active case in the East African country.

A spokesperson for Uganda's health ministry said he was not aware of a Marburg outbreak.
Africa CDC said the Marburg case was detected in Kyegegwa district in the west of Uganda, ⁠in a one-and-a-half-year-old child who had died.

Also, there is no way the US Embassy warned on 1 isolated case in the past.

I am not saying there is a full outbreak.

Unless the 1.5 year old child had solo access to cave dwelling bats, there is most probably another human who transmitted this disease to this child. The Uganda gov. should at least include a probable case figure in their reporting.

I am now very doubtful about any disease numbers that come from the Uganda gov., including Ebola.

One-year-old dies of Marburg in Uganda

The victim was a one-year-old child who died just over a week ago in the district of Kyegegwa, in Uganda’s western region, the country’s Health Minister, Dr Chris Baryomunsi, told The Telegraph.

Dr Baryomunsi said the child was the only confirmed case and claimed there was “no active transmission” of the viral haemorrhagic fever.

However, a well-placed source, speaking to The Telegraph on condition of anonymity, said there have now been at least three cases after the toddler passed the virus to two family members.

The source said the outbreak was probably the result of a new “spillover” event caused by contact with the droppings or saliva of an infected bat, Marburg’s natural reservoir.
