Investigations are continuing after the mass poisoning that occurred in the delegation of Meknassi, in the governorate of Sidi Bouzid, which claimed the lives of two people while resulting in the hospitalization of seven other members of the same family.
During his appearance on Diwan FM on Friday, May 29, 2026, the director of preventive health at the regional health directorate of Sidi Bouzid, Béchir Saïdi, denied the information widely circulated on social media suggesting a link between this poisoning and the consumption of watermelon.
He specified that the nine people involved had shared a lunch consisting mainly of couscous with osbane sauce, mutton, a vegetable salad, and soft drinks. No fruit was served during the meal.
The exact cause of the poisoning has not yet been determined. The results of the forensic examinations are pending to establish the origin of the tragedy. Samples of the food consumed have also been taken by the National Food Safety Authority for in-depth analysis.

The health of seven people who suffered food poisoning on Thursday evening is stable, said the regional health director in Sidi Bouzid, Salem Nasri.
He specified that three people have already left the hospital, while three others are expected to leave in the coming hours, adding that only one patient will remain under medical observation for the next 24 hours.
In a statement to the TAP news agency, Nasri said that samples of the different components of the meal consumed by the victims were taken for analysis in order to determine the exact causes of this poisoning which claimed the lives of two members of the same family.
He added that the poisoned individuals quickly developed respiratory, cardiac, and neurological complications.
They were first transferred to the local hospital in Meknassy where they received initial treatment, before being urgently evacuated to the Sidi Bouzid University Hospital, as their condition required intensive care in the emergency department.
The regional official also denied reports circulating on social media that the meal consumed contained watermelon.
He stressed that the regional health directorate and the National Authority for Food Safety (INSSPA) conducted a field investigation and carried out sampling for analysis at the regional and central levels.
Nasri also indicated that the bodies of the two victims have been transferred to the forensic medicine department, specifying that it is not possible to determine the exact causes of death before the publication of the results of the analyses.
