He also said that the government is awaiting the result of the laboratory investigation.

Ebola Scare: Nigeria Remains Ebola-free- FG

Abuja, By Winifred Ogbebo and Victor Okeke

The Federal Government has allayed fears while debunking rumours of another Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) incidence in Nigeria, following the rumour of a suspected outbreak in Cross River State of a 21 year-old-male student of the University of Calabar..

Speaking to journalists on Friday in Abuja over the rumours of an outbreak, the permanent secretary, Federal Ministry of Health, Mr Linus Awute, stated, ?The Federal Ministry of Health (FMOH) hereby confirms that there is no Ebola Virus Disease in Nigeria, and thus Nigeria remains Ebola- free.

Meanwhile, the victim was said to have been admitted in the casualty ward of the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital by the mother and other family members with bleeding, diarrhea, vomiting, skin rashes and mouth lesions.

His temperature on admission was 37 degrees centigrade and his vital signs were stable.

The parents said that the patient had never travelled outside Calabar. On the basis of the signs and symptoms, a tentative diagnosis of viral hemorrhagic fever, to rule out Lassa fever was made.

Some of his family members, specially the brother and sister are said to have a history of chicken pox in the last one week, prior to his falling ill.

The patient was treated with antipyretics and antibiotics during the course of illness and received intravenous fluids. Sadly, at exactly 8:15am, 7 hours post-admission, the patient passed on.
              ...
? Tests on the blood sample were run throughout the night and at 8a.m.thismorning; results confirmed that the diseased was negative for both the Ebola Virus and Lassa Fever Virus.
              ...
The permanent secretary, FMoH disclosed that additional tests using next generation sequencing methods are currently being carried out at the Redeemers University African Centre of Excellence for Genomics of Infectious Diseases at Ede, Osun State, to confirm which virus must have caused the infection and death. The result of these tests is expected on Monday October 12th 2015

CTH Ebola scare: Accident and Emergency Unit reopened, eye witnesses recount experience

By Anietie Akpan, Calabar on October 13, 2015 12:51 am

                ...
More facts emerged on the recent Ebola scare incident indicating that the 21 year old suspect who caused the scare must have died out of negligence.

The boy was said to have suffered from chicken pox and had taken septrin, which resulted to the bleeding and eventually he was kept for over three hours because the doctors and nurses were scared and his sample was not taken when he was alive.
                ...
?The first doctor was called and he drove down but when he got to the accident and emergency unit were the boy was, he drove off. The second doctor did the same thing and they switched off their phones. They now called an anatomist me but I disappeared too because life is only one and there is no duplicate. You see if you die they will not write in your face anatomist.

?Later it was one of the second Chairman, Medical Advisory Council (CMAC) Dr. Ikpi. The boy died at about 7.30 am but the sample was not taken until at about 10 pm of that day September 7 Dr. Edet Ikpi came and the person was dead.?

?The late boy was said to have been left in a stretcher just by the passage of the A and E unit until the time the test was taken.?
                ...

The Accident and Emergency (A and E) unit of the University of Calabar Teaching (UCTH) has been reopened as the 15 medical staff members and eight others quarantined

Metallic poisoning, not Ebola killed UNICAL student?FG

                      Friday Olokor

The Federal Government has given a clue to what might have killed a 21-year-old male student of the University of Calabar, who was suspected to have died of Ebola Virus Disease. It said the deceased died of ?metallic poisoning.?
                      ...
?It is not Ebola and cannot be associated with any infectious disease because all the public health protocols required in ascertaining that it is not Ebola and it is not any hemorrhagic fever has been done. The number of days for which it can infect another person or any other person around him to show similar symptoms has also been exceeded.

?So, one can comfortably conclude that it is not Ebola; it is not any other infectious disease. It has to do with the management of the person?s lifestyle in terms of what he ate or what he drank. It is just that in this era when we have to be vigilant about infectious diseases, you don?t see such things and take it for granted. So, that is why we had to respond in the way and manner that is expected of us as the custodian of the health system of Nigeria.?

In its earlier test, the government claimed that initial findings by the laboratory necessitated additional tests, leading to a delay in the release of the result.
