FG intensifies surveillance on ebola virus, says official

    March 27, 2014 by NAN
The Federal Ministry of Health on Thursday in Abuja said it has intensified surveillance to prevent the transmission of the ebola disease across the country. The ministry?s Chief Consultant Epidemiologist, Dr Akin Oyemakinde, told the News Agency of Nigeria that the current outbreak of the disease in Guinea necessitated the measures taken.
    ...
Oyemakinde said the country?s port authorities? health care officers have been sensitised to identify individuals suspected of being with the disease?s symptoms, and notify the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control.
?There is no cure for the disease and no vaccine, and anybody with the disease will only get supportive therapy. Therefore preventing the disease from coming into Nigeria is paramount..
?Guinea is close to us, and there is a report that about 60 people have died from the disease. Now, every country is at alert because the disease is spreading to neighbouring countries.
?We have sent an alert to all State Commissioners for Health, with the attention of the state epidemiologists, to sensitise the public and the health workers,? he said.
NAN reports that a recent UNICEF report says the haemorrhagic fever has spread quickly from southern Guinea, hundreds of kilometres away.
A media report also stated that Sierra Leone?s Health Ministry said it was investigating two suspected cases of ebola.
The World Health Organisation said the infection had emerged through the handling of infected chimpanzees, gorillas, fruit bats, monkeys, forest antelopes and porcupines.
These were those found dead or ill in the rain forest.
?Later, Ebola spreads in the community through human-to-human transmission, resulting from close contact with the blood, secretions, organs or other bodily fluids of infected people.
?Burial ceremonies where mourners have direct contact with the body of the deceased person can also play a role in the transmission of ebola.
?Transmission through infected semen can occur up to seven weeks after clinical recovery,? it saidhttp://www.punchng.com/news/fg-inten...says-official/

It may be possible, but additional cases may have been already emerged among close contacts and neighbors entered in contact with the presumed infected animal.

Speaking to journalists after the weekly meeting of the Executive Council of the Federation, FEC, on Wednesday, the Minister of Health, Onyebuchi Chukwu, however, said no case of the disease has been reported in Nigeria.
            ...
Mr. Chukwu explained that both Ebola and Lassa fever could be spread through animals.

?We know what spreads infection for Lassa is a special type of rat in Nigeria; the ones for Ebola are bats that even some Nigerians see it as bush meat.

Following the alarming increase in the number of cases and deaths resulting from the outbreak of Ebola Virus Disease(EVD) in some of the neighboring West African countries, the Lagos State Government has urged residents of the state to observe and maintain high standard of personal and environmental hygiene.

The State Commissioner of Health, Dr Jide Idris in a statement on Sunday said precautionary measures were necessary to prevent the outbreak of the disease.

Necessary measures according to the Commissioner include washing of hands often with soap and water, avoiding close contact with people who are sick and ensuring that objects used by the sick are decontaminated and properly disposed off to reduce the risk of infection.

Dr. Idris said the preventive measures are not limited to residents alone, but, health workers who he said should also be at alert.

He advised them to wear personal protective equipment, observe universal basic precautions when attending to suspected or confirmed cases, and report same to their Local Government Area or Ministry of Health immediately.

Lagos Discovers First Case of Ebola Virus

                        25 Jul 2014

The Lagos State Government yesterday alerted the public that a Liberian national, suspected to have the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) was detected in a private hospital in the state last Tuesday.

In a swift move, the federal government was said to have deployed a team of high-profile medical practitioners to the state to detect deadly virus.

The Special Adviser on Public Health to the state government, Dr. Yewande Adeshina, disclosed this at a news conference which she addressed alongside the Project Director of Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, Prof. Abdulsalami Nasidi, among others at the Folarin Coker Staff Clinic, Alausa.

At the conference, Adeshina gave details about the suspected case of the virus, which she said were obtained from the private health facility where the patient was taken in Lagos.

She said the patient was “a 40-year-old national of Liberia working for a West African organisation in Monrovia. He arrived in Lagos on a flight from Monrovia via Lome on Sunday at about 4 p.m.”

The special adviser explained that the history of the patient “revealed that he had no contact with any case of the virus, did not visit any person with the virus in the hospital neither did he partake in the burial of any person who died of the virus.”

But Adeshina said a high index of suspicion was raised on account of his working and living in an endemic region for the virus like Liberia and the presentation of non-specific constitutional symptoms and signs of fever, malaise, body aches, vomiting, and diarrhea among other symptoms associated with the virus.

She said the patient’s condition “is stable and recovering. The diarrhea and vomiting has stopped. Intravenous infusion has also been stopped and he is now tolerating by mouth; while the health facility has since initiated universal safety precautionary measures to prevent spread of the disease and guaranteed the safety of other patients.”
