Nigerian Official Says 7 More Show Ebola Symptoms

    LAGOS, Nigeria ? Aug 5, 2014, 1:21 PM ET
    By MARAM MAZEN Associated Press

A total of eight people in Nigeria who were in direct contact with a man who flew to Lagos and died of Ebola now have symptoms of the dreaded and deadly disease and have been placed into quarantine, a Nigerian health official said Tuesday.

Of the eight, only a doctor who treated the traveler has so far tested positive for Ebola. The others are being tested, with results pending, said Lagos state health health commissioner Jide Idris.
    ...
The eight quarantined people, who include the doctor, are among 14 who had "serious direct contact" with Sawyer, most of them at the hospital, Idris said. Authorities are following the conditions of a total of 70 people who had primary contact with Sawyer, and now they are tracking the secondary contacts of the eight people in quarantine, Idris said.

Nigeria Considers U.S. Experimental Ebola Drug for Sick Doctor
By Yinka Ibukun Aug 5, 2014 11:14 AM ET

Aug. 5 -- Bloomberg?s Yang Yang reports on U.S. Ebola patients treated with Zmapp experimental drug from Mapp Pharmaceuticals in San Diego. She speaks with Betty Liu on ?In The Loop.? (Source: Bloomberg)

Nigeria is considering applying for a dose of the experimental Ebola therapy given to two Americans to treat a Nigerian doctor who contracted the virus.

The female doctor who treated a Liberian victim of Ebola before he was diagnosed is receiving care in a hospital in Nigeria?s commercial capital of Lagos, Jide Idris, the state?s commissioner for health, told reporters today in the city.

?We will exploit the possibility of getting some,? Idris said. ?There are protocols involved.?

San Diego-based Mapp Biopharmaceutical Inc.?s experimental ZMapp drug had only been tested on infected animals before it was given to Kent Brantly and Nancy Writebol, U.S. health workers who were infected with the virus in Liberia...

Nigerian health authorities said they had confirmed a second case and quarantined eight additional people, all of whom helped treat a Liberian-American who died of the disease in Lagos in July.
    ....
Mr. Sawyer, a consultant at the Liberian Finance Ministry, had recently seen his sister die from Ebola and was exhibiting the virus's hallmark symptoms by the time he arrived in Lagos from Monrovia on July 20, said Jide Idris, Lagos State's health commissioner. The consultant told hospital workers he thought he was suffering from malaria for two days, during which time they didn't take the precautions such as wearing protective suits that are typically prescribed to prevent Ebola's spread.

Ebola's Threat Forced Nigeria's Lagos to Scramble
Creative Hustle, Lucky Breaks Helped Tamp Down Deadly Virus

Doctors in Lagos, Nigeria, were on strike July 20, the day a man infected with Ebola landed at a packed airport in Africa's biggest city.

In a few days a Muslim holiday would send health workers on a break and millions of ordinary people crowding into buses and planes. The city's health commission was out of thermometers, said Health Commissioner Jide Idris.

It could have been a nightmare, but a chaotic overpopulated city showed how some organization and creative hustle can tamp down the threat of one of the world's deadliest viruses...

I think this is the second confirmed doctor infection, but cannot be sure from reports alone. The picture is far from clear.

Maybe, but in a worst case scenario. Mr. Sawyer did several extreme things, such as vomiting on an airplane and urinating on doctors. I would fear he would infect more people than the average Ebola patient.

Also, I think the confirmed R0 is still only one. Mr. Sawyer himself doesn't count, only the doctor does.

This incident might give us an indication of an R0 number for both casual and direct contact when the monitoring period is over

Nigeria Confirms Doctor as 2nd Ebola Case

    ABUJA, Nigeria ? Aug 4, 2014, 9:23 AM ET

    By BASHIR ADIGUN Associated Press

Nigerian authorities on Monday confirmed a second case of Ebola in Africa's most populous country, an alarming setback as officials across the region battle to stop the spread of a disease that has killed more than 700 people.

Nigerian Health Minister Onyebuchi Chukwu also said test samples were pending for three other people who had shown symptoms of Ebola.

The confirmed second case is a doctor who had helped treat Patrick Sawyer, the Liberian-American man who died July 25 days after arriving in Nigeria amid the unprecedented outbreak in West Africa.

"Three others who participated in that treatment who are currently symptomatic have had their samples taken and hopefully by the end of today we should have the results of their own test," Chukwu said.

I don't think anyone knows. Due to the nature of the outbreaks, it sounds like they don't have a lot of data on the virus, how it behaves, how it might mutate, etc.

To determine whether Ebola virus infection is a possible diagnosis, there must be a combination of symptoms suggestive of EVD AND a possible exposure to EVD within 21 days before the onset of symptoms.

Maybe one of the experts online can explain the situation.

Could he have had a more transmissible co-infection (such as flu or norovirus) that he transmitted to the two handlers, while not transmitting Ebola? Or did the two of them contract an unrelated illness? Or have they been infected with Ebola and the testing is bad?

    Only time will tell.

At the end of the article ....

"By Friday, only two had developed a fever?the handlers who helped Mr. Sawyer into a wheelchair. Their blood tested negative, and they are still under close watch."

Thanks for finding that article, Nika! So there is quite a bit of data about Ebola and pregnancy.
