OTHER AFFECTED AND PREVIOUSLY AFFECTED COUNTRIES
    • Liberia was declared free of Ebola transmission on 9 May 2015, after reporting no new cases for 42 consecutive days. The country subsequently entered a 3-month period of heightened surveillance, during which approximately 30 blood samples and oral swabs are collected each day from potential cases and tested for EVD. On 29 June, this routine surveillance detected a confirmed case of EVD in Margibi County, Liberia—the first new confirmed case reported from the country since 20 March. The case was a 17-year-old male who first became ill on 21 June, died on 28 June, and subsequently tested positive for EVD. Two contacts of the first-detected case have since been confirmed as EVD-positive. These additional cases are from the same small community as the first-detected case, and are now being treated in an ETC in the capital, Monrovia. In addition, a probable case is in isolation at an ETC. The case has a strong epidemiological link to the first-detected case and is showing some symptoms of EVD, but has indeterminate test results for EVD. The origin of infection of the cluster of cases is currently under investigation. At present, these cases are considered to constitute a separate outbreak from that which was declared over on 9 May....

Test shows new Liberian Ebola case similar to earlier virus

      DAKAR/GENEVA

Tests on the Ebola virus that claimed Liberia's first victim since it was declared Ebola-free in May showed it was closely related to an earlier Liberian strain, the World Health Organization and a health official said on Friday.

The findings suggest the disease was never entirely eliminated from the West African country.

"It indicates that the virus is closely related to one that was circulating in Liberia in that particular area," WHO spokesman Tarik Jasarevic said, confirming initial results of the genetic tests obtained by Reuters.

"So it's either (from) a survivor or non-identified transmission in the community," he added.

Surge of Ebola in Liberia May Be Linked to a Survivor

        By SHERI FINKJULY 9, 2015

A resurgence of Ebola in the last week in Liberia, which had been declared free of the disease, may have originated with a survivor still carrying the virus, according to scientists who analyzed the genetic sequence of the virus from the body of a 17-year-old Liberian boy who died of Ebola last week.

The boy?s virus did not match strains still circulating in the continuing outbreak in Guinea and Sierra Leone, meaning he was unlikely to have caught the virus through cross-border travel.

?The origin of this virus is Liberian,? said Stuart Nichol of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. ?Based on the absence of reported cases for several months, this does push us toward thinking about a possible sexual event as an early step in this cluster of cases.?

In Liberia, there are currently 6 confirmed EVD cases, including 2 deaths. A new case confirmed on Sunday, 12 July, died on arrival at the Eternal Love Winning Africa Ebola Treatment Unit. The deceased was among those on contact list, but was found in Paynesville, Monserrado County.

The Ministry of Health has called for a ramping up of response in Montserrado County. The source of transmission for the current outbreak is still under investigation. Over 132 contacts in Margibi and Monstserrado Counties are being monitored.

Liberia confirms new Ebola case as outbreak spreads

            MONROVIA

A Liberian woman has died of Ebola in a hospital in Monrovia shortly after being admitted, becoming the sixth confirmed case of the virus since it resurfaced last month after a seven-week lull, a senior medical official said on Tuesday.

The victim from Montserrado County, which contains Monrovia, is thought to be linked to the other five cases from neighboring Margibi County, where the disease reemerged.

Her detection raised fears that the infection may be spreading in a new area of the country.

"There is one new case. This time, the response area is Montserrado county. The person died in Monrovia," Liberia's Chief Medical Officer Dr. Francis Ketteh told Reuters.

MONROVIA (Reuters) - A Liberian woman has died of Ebola in a hospital in Monrovia shortly after being admitted, becoming the sixth confirmed case and second death since the virus resurfaced last month, a senior medical official said on Tuesday

The victim, Kebbeh Kollie, lived near the capital, Monrovia. She was the sister of Cassius Kollie, one of five Ebola cases discovered in neighbouring Margibi County, where the disease re-emerged after a seven-week lull.
              ...
A Reuters witness saw 16 people under quarantine in the Kollie family's unfinished house next to marshland in the A.B. Tolbert community.

Her mother told Reuters that Kebbeh Kollie had been in contact with her brother Cassius when he returned to the family home to cut the grass, but he was not showing any signs of the virus then.

Cassius Kollie is one of four people being treated for Ebola at a specialised treatment unit in the ELWA hospital in Monrovia...

                ...
"There are no Ebola cases anywhere in Liberia as we speak," Deputy Health Minister Tolbert Nyenswah told The Associated Press.

In an interview earlier with state media, he said the four patients had recovered and would be discharged in a ceremony on Monday.

"It is still too early to say is it is over," Nyenswah cautioned in the interview, noting that 123 contacts were being monitored.

Last four Ebola cases in Liberia discharged from clinic

                  MONROVIA | BY JAMES GIAHYUE

The last four cases of Ebola in Liberia were discharged from a treatment clinic in the capital of Monrovia on Monday, meaning there were no more confirmed carriers of the deadly virus in the West African country.

The group of four, released from the ELWA treatment unit to cheers and applause, were part of new wave of Ebola infections in Margibi County just outside Monrovia discovered in late June.

Two other confirmed cases have since died, including the sister of one of the released patients.
                  ...
At least 100 contacts who came into contact with the six cases and are at risk of developing symptoms will remain under surveillance into August.

...Officials said last week they were tracking a herbalist who treated the 17-year-old boy who sparked the new cases and fled to Nimba County.
