At least 59 of out of 80 persons are now confirmed dead after coming in contact with the Ebola virus in the southern forest regions of Gueckedou and Macenta in Guinea, close to the Liberian border, Guinea?s government has confirmed.
Reports of the virus trickling into northern Liberia suggest at least one Ebola-related death in Foya, Lofa County. Up to press time, officials in Lofa could not be reached for comment. Monrovia officials are also tightlipped, only stating that a press conference will be held Monday.
A few cases are reported in neighboring Sierra Leone as well.
The Foya connection has not been independently confirmed and, Liberia?s Health Minister Dr. Walter Gwenigale was not available for comment yesterday is expected to hold a press conference today on the situation.

MONROVIA, March 24, 2014 (AFP) - Five patients have died in Liberia of suspected Ebola fever, the government said on Monday, as neighbouring Guinea battled an outbreak of the virus which has killed dozens.

"As of this morning six cases have been reported of which five have already died -- four female adults and one male child. One of the suspected cases, a female child, is under treatment," Health Minister Walter Gwenigale said in a statement.

Aid workers and health officials battled Monday to contain west Africa's first outbreak of the deadly Ebola virus in Guinea as neighboring Liberia reported its first suspected victims.

Although there have also been outbreaks among humans in Uganda, the Republic of Congo and Gabon, the disease had never before been detected in people in west Africa.

Aid organisation Plan International warned that the epidemic risked spreading to neighbouring countries because of the free movement of people across borders.

"Communities, especially children, in the border areas between Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone are vulnerable and need immediate support," Ibrahima Toure, Plan's country director in Guinea, said in a statement.

Guinea is one of the world's poorest nations despite vast untapped mineral wealth, with a stagnating economy and inflation at 13 percent, youth unemployment estimated at 60 percent and ranking 178th out of 187 countries on the UN's Human Development Index.

After Guinea hit by haemorrhagic fever, including that caused by the Ebola virus, which were sixty deaths since January, six suspected cases of Ebola were detected Monday in neighboring Liberia, including five deaths.
"Until this morning (Monday), six cases were detected, of which five are already dead: four women and one male child," said a statement from the Liberian Minister of Health, Walter Gwenigale, stating that the sixth case is a little girl, now "under treatment."

These people, whose nationalities were not specified, were from the south of Guinea for treatment in hospitals in northern Liberia in Lofa County, near the border, according to the minister.

These are "people who came to the funeral in Guinea and returned home" in Liberia, in a border area, said Marie-Christine Ferir responsible crises of Doctors Without Borders (MSF), in AFP in Brussels.
There are "family ties" in this region straddling the two countries, "people come to attend the funeral of one side and unfortunately they unknowingly infect and after they return home," said she said.
According to the Liberian Minister of Health, Liberian health inspectors "already investigating the situation (...), do blood tests and raise awareness among health authorities on the disease."
In Conakry, the Ministry of Health and the World Health Organization (WHO) said in a statement that "Guinea recorded from January to March 23, a total of 87 suspected cases of viral haemorrhagic fever which 61 death ", mainly in the South.

Monrovia - Liberian authorities on Tuesday reported 11 suspected Ebola cases and five deaths, after the deadly virus spread from neighbouring Guinea where it killed at least 59 people.

The Daily Observer has been reliably learned from a credible source that one patient was on Tuesday, March 25, quarantined at the JFK Medical Center in Sinkor, Monrovia, after health practitioners noticed symptoms of the Ebola virus.
Our source, who asked not to be named, said the patient had come from one of those regions in Lofa region, where at least three confirmed Ebola deaths were reported by authorities of the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare in Monrovia.

Two suspected Ebola cases were diagnosed at the Ganta United Methodist Hospital on Monday, March 24, and the patients were immediately transferred to the John F. Kennedy Hospital in Monrovia, Dr. Claude Monga, Acting Chief Medical Officer of Ganta Hospital disclosed.
Speaking to a team of journalists on Tuesday, March 25, Dr. Monga revealed the two patients were transferred because the Ganta hospital didn?t have anywhere to keep such patients.
He said one of the patients, believed to be a nine-year-old girl, was brought from Guinea and was vomiting and excreting blood, days after she was admitted at the hospital. After discovering her condition, she was immediately transferred.
He also noted the other patient didn?t vomit or excrete blood, but had been having persistent fever for the past five days and was also transferred.
Dr. Claude said Ebola?s symptoms sometimes take five to ten days before they can actually be identified.

The Ministry of Health and Social Welfare wishes to inform the public that as of today (March 25, 2014), a total of eight suspected cases, with five deaths have been reported from the field to the MOHSW. Six of those suspected cases were reported during the 14th to 24th March 2014 while two additional cases were reported from Foyah District, Lofa County yesterday evening. Specimens from the two (2) additional persons were collected pending shipment to Guinea for laboratory confirmation.
