Ituri: the territory of Mahagi exposed to the Ebola epidemic declared in Uganda (Health authorities)

    Published on Wed, 16/11/2022 - 03:26 | Modified on Wed, 11/16/2022 - 03:26

The health structures in the territory of Mahagi (Ituri) are not equipped to deal with the haemorrhagic epidemic of Ebola, which is raging in Uganda, a country which shares the border with this territorial entity.

The movement of populations, which is intense between the two countries, is not controlled in several border localities, where there are no State services, attest the health authorities.

This situation increases the risk of this epidemic spreading in this part of the DRC.

Dozens of cases of Ebola have already been recorded in Uganda, which hosts many Congolese, who cross the border between the two countries on a daily basis.

Local authorities have testified, however, to be on alert to deal with this disease.

The meetings, which bring together the heads of several services and the security committee, are held every week to define response mechanisms followed by a public awareness campaign.

However, the challenges are enormous in the three health zones of this territory, specify medical sources.

There is no place of isolation to accommodate the sick. Protective equipment for medical personnel is also lacking.

But above all, the porosity of the borders prevents the control of the movements of the inhabitants, who pass through informal paths.

The head doctor of the Mahagi health zone calls for the involvement of the Kinshasa authorities.

The risks of the spread of Ebola are also enormous in the border territory of Aru, which faces the same difficulties in preventing this epidemic.
