      New Ebola case: Minister Eteni calls for calm, the response is being organized

      A new case of Ebola has been confirmed in the DRC, according to the announcement made this Sunday by Dr Eteni Longondo, Minister of Health. It is said to be a woman whose husband was already affected by the previous epidemic in the region.
      "She presented with signs in the locality of Biena (North Kivu). The sample was sent to Butembo. It was positive. We have another episode of this disease. I also want to tell my brothers and sisters of Butembo not to panic, ”the minister said.
      And add:
      “We organized a fight with a provincial response team which will be in Beni today. Another national team will follow early next week. We are here. We will do everything to make this disease go away as soon as possible. I myself could go down at the beginning of next week ”.
      The previous Ebola epidemic in the Eteni Longondo country officially left 55 dead for 130 contaminations. Declared June 1, 2020, it was terminated on November 18.

            As I recall one of the places Ebola can persist is in sperm so hopefully his sperm will get tested.

              Congo, the ebola virus returns after the 2020 pandemic: a woman died in North Kivu

              by FQ | FEBRUARY 8, 2021

              The World Health Organization specifies that "it is not unusual for sporadic cases to occur following a serious epidemic" while reporting an ebola victim in the Democratic Republic of Congo , after the previous one was declared over in June 2020 epidemic. The case concerns a woman, also the wife of an Ebola survivor , who died in Butembo, a city in the North Kivu province , which had been one of the epicenters. The local branch of the National Institute for Biomedical Research confirmed the presence of the virus in the samples taken from the woman, who presented with compatible symptoms with the disease in a local health center seeking treatment.

              North Kivu provincial health authorities are leading the response to this situation in liaison with the Ministry of Health and with the support of WHO which has provided training to laboratory technicians , contact detectors, local vaccination teams , and contacted the community groups to raise awareness of the virus and field a survivor program. The epidemiologists WHO are investigating the case. More than 70 contacts have already been identified. And disinfection of the sites visited by the patient is also underway.

              "The experience and skills of local health teams have been instrumental in detecting this new Ebola case and paving the way for a timely response," assured Matshidiso Moeti , WHO Africa Regional Director. The UN health agency "is providing support to the authorities sanitary local and national to trace, identify and quickly treat the contacts to reduce the further spread of the virus ." Genome sequencing is currently underway to identify the Ebola strain and determine its possible link to the previous epidemic....https://www.ilfattoquotidiano.it/202...-kivu/6093820/

                Goma, 7 February 2021 – The UN children’s agency is deploying additional staff and preparing to transport medical equipment and supplies to the affected area and assist efforts to track and trace all those who came into contact with the dead person in the surrounding area.
                UNICEF is working closely with local health authorities to support community mobilization, control infection mechanisms and decontamination activities......

                UNICEF is currently organizing shipping medical equipment and supplies that will be brought to the affected area from Mbandaka, Equateur province.
                Congolese health authorities say the new case is the wife of an Ebola survivor. She went to the Biena health centre, 90km south-west of Butembo, on 1 February with symptoms of Ebola. Will Feuer@WILLFOIA

                  ......More than 70 people who came in direct contact with the woman while she was contagious have already been identified, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said Monday during a news conference from the agency’s Geneva headquarters.

                  “So far, no other cases have been identified,” Tedros said. “But it’s possible there will be further cases because the woman had contact with many people after she became symptomatic.”
                  .....The WHO has sent a rapid-response team to Butembo, Tedros added, and vaccine doses are on the way. The WHO says there are currently two licensed Ebola vaccines. Tedros did not say which is on the way to the area.

                  “Thanks to the enormous capacity built during the latest outbreak, provincial health authorities have significant experience in responding to Ebola and in preventing onward transmission,” Tedros said Monday. “We hope that vaccination will start as soon as possible....https://www.cnbc.com/2021/02/08/who-...es-in-drc.html

                    mentions runners, another death, a sick guard.

                    North Kivu / Ebola: The provincial government plans a new vaccination

                    The Provincial Minister of Health, Doctor Nzanzu Syalita Eug?ne, hosted this Wednesday February 10, 2021, a press briefing at the office of the Provincial Division of Health (DPS-Butembo) in which he announced the imminent start of vaccination contacts of the very first positive case of the twelfth Ebola outbreak, which was declared in Biena health zone in Lubero on Sunday.

                    “The households have been decontaminated. Health care structures, in particular the Masoya health center, Matanda hospital (Butembo). And here we are preparing for a vaccination for contacts and contacts of contacts. And, our teams are hard at work to be able to carry out other actions with the community, ” he said.

                    Doctor Nzanzu Syalita Eug?ne also specifies that up to now, around a hundred contact cases have already been listed, but he regrets the fact that some “high-risk cases” are on the run.

                    We have already listed 161 contacts in the two health zones. Particularly in Biena and Katwa. But, there are other contacts here in Butembo that are being followed up. But, we have other contacts that we haven't seen yet. In particular the biker who (died of Ebola, Editor's note) transported him from Masoya to Butembo.
                    There is the sick guard, and who would probably end up in Kirima, in the Biena health zone,
                    ”said Nzanzu Syalita Eugene, Minister of Health in North Kivu.

                    Last Tuesday, the World Health Organization (WHO), in a statement read by 7SUR7.CD, claimed to have deployed public health experts to North Kivu, in order to counter this twelfth Ebola epidemic in the region.
                    This disease is declared in the east of the country 228 days after the tenth Ebola epidemic which raged, from August 2018 to June 2020, in the provinces of North Kivu and Ituri, causing the death of more than 2,000 people. . Several other vaccinations had been carried out, in particular with the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

                      DRC-Ebola: more than 160 contacts listed in Butembo and Lubero will be vaccinated to cut the chain of contamination

                      The provincial minister of health of North Kivu, Eug?ne Nzanzu Syalita, announces the imminent vaccination of more than 160 people listed as contacts of the first case of the twelfth Ebola epidemic declared on Sunday, February 7 in the Biena health zone, near Butembo (North Kivu).

                      During a press briefing this Wednesday, February 10, in the town of Butembo, Mr. Nzanzu Syalita clarified that these contacts were recorded in Lubero and Butembo. But the minister remains worried about the leakage of two high-risk contacts, in particular the nurse and the taxi driver who drove the victim to the town of Butembo.
                      “At this stage, we have already listed 161 contacts in two health zones, in Biena and Katwa. But there are also certain contacts in the Butembo health zone which are being followed up. We also have other contacts that we have not yet seen, in particular the biker who transported him (the patient) from Masoya to Butembo, there is a sick guard that we have not yet seen, and who would end up in Kirima, ”said the provincial health minister.
                      According to him, to put an end to Ebola as quickly as possible, all these contacts must agree to be followed for 21 days and be vaccinated to avoid infecting those around them. He reports that infection prevention and control actions have already been taken in Masoya and Butembo.
                      “The households have been decontaminated, the care structures, in particular the health centers of Masoya and the Matanda hospital decontaminated, we have already visited the contacts. And we are preparing for a contact vaccination, and contact contacts. And our teams are hard at work to carry out other actions with the community so that it understands that there is already a threat, and that we must unite to work hand in hand to contain this epidemic most. quickly possible, ”adds the provincial Minister of Health.
                      He calls on the population not to give in to rumors as during the previous Ebola episode in the region, and reassures that the Congolese government with its partners, in particular the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Fund for Children (UNICEF), are doing everything to prevent the spread of Ebola as the country faces another health crisis, including that of Covid-19.
                      "We appeal to the community not to give in to rumors, because there are a lot of rumors, especially since you know that the rumors were the first to make us uncomfortable in Butembo, where some who are not from the domain start declaring things to confuse the population. You know what we have had: we have experienced a lot of deaths, because we did not trust the care providers, ”urges Mr. Nzanzu Syalita.
                      A new case of Ebola was declared in Lubero territory (North Kivu) on Sunday February 7. The patient who showed signs in Biena, a health zone in Lubero, went to a hospital in Butembo to die. Until Wednesday February 10, this case remains the only one so far notified for this twelfth Ebola epidemic. {The lady}

                        Ebola virus disease – Democratic Republic of the Congo

                        Disease outbreak news
                        10 February 2021

                        On 7 February 2021, the Minister of Health of the Democratic Republic of the Congo declared an outbreak of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) after the laboratory confirmation of one case in North Kivu Province. The case was an adult female living in Biena Health Zone. To date the source of infection is still under investigation.
                        On 25 January 2021, the case presented with nasal bleeding. From 25 January to 1 February, she reportedly received outpatient care at a local health centre. From 1 to 3 February, she was admitted to a second health centre with signs of physical weakness, dizziness, joint pain, epigastric pain, liquid stools, headache and difficulty breathing. On 3 February, a blood sample was collected for EVD testing due to her epidemiological link with an EVD survivor. On the same day, she was referred to a hospital in Katwa Health Zone (part of Butembo city) following the deterioration of her condition. She was admitted to the intensive care unit the same day and died on 4 February. On 5 February, the body was buried in Musienene Health Zone, however not under safe burial practices.
                        On 6 February, Butembo laboratory confirmed the case positive for EVD by GeneXpert. On 7 February, the sample was shipped to Goma laboratory, and tested positive for EVD by GeneXpert on 8 February. Samples were sent to the Institut de Recherche Biomedicale for next generation sequencing in order to determine whether this recent Ebola case is linked to a new spill over event or to a resurgence of the outbreak that affected North Kivu, Ituri and South Kivu Provinces in 2018-2020.
                        As of 8 February 2021, a total of 117 contacts has been identified and are under follow up. Investigations and response activities are ongoing.
                        Public health response
                        • An urgent meeting was convened on 8 February by the Minister of Health, and a team led by the Provincial Minister of Health of North Kivu was deployed to Butembo to organize immediate response activities;
                        • Investigations are on-going in Katwa, Biena and Musienene Health Zones to identify the source(s) of transmission, identify contacts and conduct active case finding;
                        • Health facilities that were visited by the case have been disinfected;
                        • The decommissioned Ebola Treatment Center of Katwa is being assessed for reopening;
                        • WHO is providing ongoing support to the national authorities through staff present in Butembo territory, by preparing shipment of vaccine doses to Butembo and supporting shipment of cold chain equipment to Butembo territory;
                        • WHO and national authorities are strengthening laboratory capacities by ensuring availability of GeneXpert cartridges at Butembo laboratory; and
                        • WHO is supporting local authorities to implement immediate actions including case investigation, case finding, contact listing and follow-up.
                        There are currently therapeutics (Regeneron and mAb114) available for up to 400 patients in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
                        WHO risk assessment

                        Preliminary information indicates that the patient visited at least three health facilities in two health zones and was unsafely buried in a third health zone. There is therefore a risk of EVD spreading to other health zones. WHO is closely monitoring the situation and the risk assessment will be updated as more information becomes available.
                        The resurgence is not unexpected given that EVD is endemic in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and that Ebola virus is present in animal reservoirs in the region. The risk of re-emergence through exposure to animal hosts or bodily fluids of Ebola survivors cannot be excluded. In addition, it is not unusual for sporadic cases to occur following a major outbreak.
                        There are a number of ongoing challenges for surveillance, including access to affected areas and community mistrust toward authorities and outbreak responders. Other health emergencies such as coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19), cholera and measles outbreaks may jeopardize the country’s ability to rapidly detect and respond to re-emergence of EVD cases.
                        WHO advice

                        WHO advises the following risk reduction measures as an effective way to reduce EVD transmission in humans:
                        • Continue to train and retrain the health workforce for early detection, isolation and treatment of EVD cases;
                        • Prepare for vaccination of health workers;
                        • Engage with communities to reinforce safe and dignified burial practices; and
                        • Ensure availability of personal protective equipment and infection prevention and control supplies to manage ill patients and for decontamination.
                        To reduce the risk of wildlife-to-human transmission, such as through contact with fruit bats, monkeys and apes:
                        • Handle wildlife with gloves and other appropriate protective clothing; and
                        • Cook animal products (blood and meat) thoroughly before consumption and avoid consumption of raw meat from wild animals.
                        To reduce the risk of human-to-human transmission from direct or close contact with people with EVD symptoms, particularly with their bodily fluids:
                        • Wear gloves and appropriate personal protective equipment when taking care of ill patients at home; and
                        • Wash hands regularly after visiting patients in hospital, as well as after taking care of patients at home or touching or coming into contact with any body fluids.
                        To reduce the risk of possible transmission from virus persistence in some body fluids of survivors, WHO recommends providing medical care, psychological support and biological testing (until two consecutive negative tests) through an EVD survivors care programme. WHO does not recommend isolation of male or female convalescent patients whose blood has been tested negative for Ebola virus.

                              Second person dies of Ebola in DRC as experts fear new outbreak

                              WHO warns of further cases after mourners did not follow social distancing protocols during funeral
                              ByAnna Pujol-Mazzini11 February 2021 • 4:15pm

                              A second person has died of Ebola in the Democratic Republic of Congo in a rapid resurgence of the disease which had been declared eradicated in the country last year, the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Thursday.

                              A 42-year-old farmer in eastern Congo, who was married to an Ebola survivor, died of the disease last week, three months after the previous outbreak had been declared over. She is believed to have infected a second woman at the health centre she was treated at, who has also died.

                              "We are waiting for the results of the [genetic] sequencing to know if it is linked to the previous outbreak or if it is a new infection," Gervais Folefack, WHO's emergency lead for Ebola in Congo, told the Telegraph from Butembo, the outbreak's epicentre.

                              Investigations are underway to determine whether the first victim had caught the disease from her husband through sexual intercourse. The virus can survive in sperm for more than a year after an infected man has recovered.

                              But the husband had been regularly monitored and his sperm samples had tested negative since September 2020, the WHO said.

                              Her burial, which did not follow health measures to contain the spread of Ebola, could have infected more people.
                              The deadly haemorrhagic fever spreads quickly through direct contact with bodily fluids and causes severe vomiting and diarrhoea.

                              "The burial was not secured, which means people were touching the corpse. We are expecting other cases from these two deaths because there was not a secure burial," Mr Folefack said.

                              Around 200 contacts of the two cases have been identified so far.....
