Congo and WHO investigate possible Ebola outbreak
    -------------------------------------------------------------
Health officials in Democratic Republic of Congo are investigating a possible outbreak of Ebola in a village about 270 km (170 miles) northeast of the capital Kinshasa, the government and the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Thursday.

Health minister Felix Kabange said that response teams arrived in Masambio, a village in Bandundu province, on Thursday [2 Jul 2015] to collect samples for testing.

Kabange said that 6 hunters fell ill on Friday [26 Jun 2015] with symptoms of Ebola including diarrhea, vomiting and bloody urine after killing an antelope the day before that had been stumbling and was probably sick. Four of the hunters have since died.

However, he said that none suffered from a fever, the earliest and most common symptom of the disease, suggesting that they may have suffered only from food poisoning.

The samples would return to Kinshasa for testing either Thursday night [2 Jul 2015] or Friday morning [3 Jul 2015], Kabange said. But he cautioned that it would be too early to render a definitive judgment since the disease's typical incubation period is between 7 and 15 days.

Congo has seen periodic outbreaks of the disease, which since December 2013 has killed more than 11 200 people in Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea in the worst Ebola epidemic on record.

A 3-month outbreak that killed 49 people late last year [2014] in the remote forests of northwestern Congo was not related to the West African epidemic.

[If accurately reported, the absence of fever in the hunters would make Ebola virus disease less likely. Also, more typically Ebola affects a single individual who spreads virus to others during illness. Certainly many other pathogens could cause fatalities after consumption or butchering of a sick animal (e.g., anthrax, Rift Valley fever, Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever). Results of testing are eagerly awaited.

If Ebola virus disease, it is likely acquired zoonotically and not related to the continuing outbreak in West Africa. - Mod.LM

Bandundu: government launches a health investigation after the suspicious deaths of 4 hunters

      published there are 9 hours 27 minutes | Last Update July 3, 2015 at 9:10 |

The government has commissioned a health investigation consecutively to the deaths of four hunters who ate a sick antelope found in the forests of Mai Ndombe in Bandundu. Before dying, these people had symptoms such as diarrhea and vomiting, announced Thursday, July 2 in Kinshasa the Minister of Health, Dr. Felix Kabange Numbi. The survey aims to determine the origin of the disease.

"We have a hot alert in Bandundu province. We sent this morning an investigation team. What is paradoxical is that none of the patients had fever, "said Minister Kabange Numbi. He said it could be food poisoning. But the investigation will determine whether there is another pathology.

"I ask the people to be very calm. If it is a more serious situation, we will provide information to the public; but so far no other case has been reported except those that have been identified, "added Felix Kabange Numbi.

The Congolese Minister of Health has also indicated that a similar investigation was launched in Zongo.

"On Monday June 29, three compatriots crossed the river to go to Bangui. The Pasteur Institute of Bangui analyzed the sample and confirmed for one of them, the existence of Marburg fever virus. A few minutes ago, we just had the results - control of the Laboratory pastor of Bangui: two patients are negative for Marburg virus. So I can confirm here that there is no outbreak of Marburg fever, "said Felix Kabange Numbi.

No Ebola virus disease in Bandundu, the minister of public health

        July 3rd, 2015

Kinshasa, 03/06 (ACP) .- The Minister of Health, Felix Kabange Numbi said Friday, during a press conference held in Kinshasa, that no cases of Ebola virus disease was yet notified in Bandundu Province, after the death of four hunters who consumed the meat of antelope found sick in the bush, in the village of Masambio located roughly 150 km of Bandundu City and 270 km from Kinshasa.

"There are two facts that justify if there is or not the disease, notably major clinical signs and incubation period (time elapsed between the time of infection and the time of the clinical signs). Generally, this time varies between 7 and 15 days and can even go up to 21 days. The period may be reduced when, for example, is transfused the blood of a person who contracted the Ebola disease. "said the minister.

For the situation of the village Masambio, Felix Kabange reported that pending the results of the analysis of samples taken, we can not say that this is the Ebola virus disease. This is justified by the fact that none of these six hunters had fever and the other clinical symptoms, including diarrhea, vomiting, red colored urine and jaundice of the eyes, came forward three days after the consumption of this meat. "All presented these signs on the same day," he said.

He has, for this purpose, reported that the samples are being sent to the National Institute of Biomedical Research (INRB) in Kinshasa for further confirmations. He also said that apart from these hunters, no other person has clinical signs, while a part of this meat was consumed in Bandundu city and another in the village of Masambio. Of these six hunters, said Dr. Felix Kabange Numbi, four died, including one in Bandundu City and three in Masambio.

"We dispatched epidemiologists and outreach teams in this site with all precautions on communicable diseases. The products of disinfection of premises, protection and collection equipment and all equipment in the fight against Ebola available to them to react as soon as possible in case of Ebola, "he said, because" it takes Always err by effect. "

Furthermore, the Minister Felix Kabange Numbi has not only urged people to calm, but he also invited to practice hygiene, especially regular hand washing.

Ongoing investigations into an alert to Marburg in Zongo

As for the case of a Congolese living in Zongo in northern Equateur province, diagnosed positive for Marburg fever by the Institut Pasteur in Bangui in the Central African Republic, the Minister of Public Health revealed that investigations continue sensitizing and that team will soon visit the area.

"There is no epidemic of Marburg fever in DRC," he said, before saying that the Ministry of Public Health has initiated investigations dice reception of this new and so far there were no reported cases of Marburg fever.

Moreover, Dr. Kabange explained that two Congolese of Zongo left for mourning in Bangui where they had high fevers. From there, we brought samples of their blood at the Pasteur Institute of Bangui where they were examined and the result was positive for Marburg virus for one of them. This result was made public immediately in CAR. There was confusion because they did not know, at this institute, which of the two people had been diagnosed positive for Marburg virus. Thus the Pasteur Institute was forced to redo the tests for the two Congolese subjects who had already returned in Zongo. This time the results have been negative for two people.

The Marburg fever has for reservoir the bat. And yet, said Minister of Health, there are no old mines in Zongo to serve as a refuge for bats and cause fever Marburg.ACP / Fng / Mat / Ndom

The DRC government and the World Health Organization (WHO) officials have earlier said they started an investigation on a possible outbreak about 270 km northeast of the country?s capital.

Felix Kabange: "There is no epidemic of Ebola, let alone Marburg haemorrhagic fever in DRC"

            published there 1 hour, 3 minutes, | Last Update July 5, 2015 at 3:18 |

The Minister of Health, Felix Kabange Numbi rejected, Saturday, June 4, the thesis of the existence of a possible outbreak of Ebola and Marburg haemorrhagic fever in DRC. It is based on the examination results of the National Biomedical Research Institute (INRB) of Kinshasa and the laboratory of the Pasteur Institute of Bangui (CAR).

The Minister of Health has commissioned the investigation of four hunters who died after eating an antelope in Mai-Ndombe (Bandundu) indicates that these deaths are not related to the Ebola virus.

He rather attributes these deaths to food poisoning.

"Regarding Kwamouth in Bandundu, the 6 sick hunters consumed a poisoned antelope and this has nothing to do with any disease. For now, the health of two survivors of the 6 evolve positively, "said Felix Kabange on national television.

The health minister says that the INRB found nothing in all the samples:

"The results of INRB came out and that all samples are negative. Therefore, I wish to inform the national and international opinion that there is no outbreak of Ebola, let alone Marboug hemorrhagic fever in DRC, "said Felix Kabange.
            ...
The minister also indicated that the Bangui Pasteur laboratory has found a single case of Marburg fever in the three Congolese examined while they were crossing the river to go to Bangui, Central African capital.
