In a statement released this morning, the Ministry of Health had announced an accumulated total of 336 cases of covid-19 and 84 recovered patients.

In the municipality of Praia, of the 80 samples analyzed (103 in a total of six counties) at the Virology Laboratory of the National Institute of Public Health, eight gave a positive result for covid-19, bringing the total of the Cape Verdean capital to an accumulated of 269 cases, of which 30 recovered and two deaths.

According to the statement, these data are for the May 16 samples, given that in the last two days, due to the maintenance of the test equipment, no analyzes were carried out in that laboratory.

Since March 19, when the first case of the disease was diagnosed in the archipelago - a 62-year-old English citizen who would eventually die days later - Cape Verde has added 335 cases of covid-19. Of these, three ended up dying, two infected foreign tourists returned to their countries of origin and 85 are reported to have recovered.

Thus, 245 cases of covid-19 remain active in the country. "The majority of patients with active infection remain in isolation and have a favorable evolution, except for two who inspire differentiated care", reaffirms the statement.

On the island of Boa Vista, where the first outbreak of the disease was recorded in the archipelago, out of 56 cases of covid-19, only two remain active, while on the island of S?o Vicente the only record is of three people from the same family who contracted disease, but which were recovered in April.

The new coronavirus responsible for the current covid-19 pandemic was detected in China in December 2019 and has already infected more than 4.7 million people worldwide, of whom more than 316,000 died. More than 1.7 million have already been recovered.

Cape Verde for the first time with more recoveries than new cases
Cape Verde today registered 10 patients recovered from the new coronavirus, with two in Boa Vista and eight in Praia, a number for the first time higher than the new confirmed cases, which were seven, according to health authorities.
        5/21/20 9:00 PM ‧ 1 hour ago by Lusa

"I think it was a good day for Cape Verde in relation to the prevention and control of the coronavirus. For the first time we have more cases recovered than confirmed cases", said the national director of Health of Cape Verde, Artur Correia, at the press conference of the daily situation of the disease in the archipelago.

In the morning, the Ministry of Health had announced two recovered patients in Boa Vista, which no longer had active cases of coronavirus, 63 days after the first case, on March 19.

At the meeting with the press, Artur Correia announced eight more patients discharged from Praia, increasing from 85 to 95 the total in the country (26.6%), on the day he diagnosed seven more new cases.

With those recovered, the number of hospitalized patients decreased to 256, all in Santiago, the only island now with active cases, the majority in the city of Praia (249).

According to the national director of Health, the fact that Boa Vista no longer has active cases constitutes a "great challenge" for the island, and for S?o Vicente, the other island that registered cases, but also for all the others without any registration.

"The great challenge is to maintain this status and this requires a set of reinforcements that must be made in terms of epidemiological surveillance", stressed the Ministry of Health spokesman, referring that the people who left the isolation in Boa Vista will be followed , at least, for a period of 14 days, to know the evolution of your health status.

In addition, Artur Correia said that health authorities will continue to carry out epidemiological surveillance at the entrance of the islands, of people from islands with or without transmission of the infection.

As for the city of Praia, the new epicenter of the virus in the country, the health official announced the beginning of "intense activity" in the neighborhoods, with nurses, doctors, civil protection agents, Armed Forces and information, education and communication agents .

"In order to be able to make a strong intervention, draw the population's attention to the prevention and control of the disease and also testing, through rapid tests, the people who are justified for the purpose and identifying possible positive cases", he reinforced.

In just over two months, Boa Vista stopped having active cases and Praia became the center of the disease, with daily cases, but Artur Correia explained that it is not a matter of failures, but of an epidemiological context, which is " complement different ".

Boa Vista is one of the largest islands in Cape Verde, but with low population density, while in Praia the population density is huge and people are more concentrated, explained Artur Correia, saying that this provides a higher rate of transmission and a greater increase in the number of cases.

"It is not about failures, they are the same measures we took there and here they are being reinforced. There is no different strategy. It is the reinforcement of measures, in a completely different context," continued the same source.

At this moment, the island of Santiago is the only one that remains in a state of emergency, at least, until May 29, with the National Director of Health saying that the objective is to contain and prevent the "sudden advance" of cases in the capitol capital -verdian.

"To some extent, we are happy with the results we are achieving, but aware that we need to do more, continue to do, even after the state of emergency," asked Correia, recalling that the exception period does not eliminate the virus.

Cape Verde has already diagnosed an accumulated 356 cases of covid-19, on the islands of Santiago (297), Boa Vista (56) and S?o Vicente (3).

Of the total, three resulted in death, 95 were recovered, two were transferred to their countries and the country currently has 256 active patients, and all on the island of Santiago.

Globally, according to a report by the AFP news agency, the covid-19 pandemic has already claimed more than 328,000 deaths and infected more than five million people in 196 countries and territories. More than 1.8 million patients were considered cured.

In a message to the country from the city of Praia, the head of Government, Ulisses Correia e Silva, highlighted the fact that the last island in the country, Santiago, ended the state of emergency at the end of today, two months later, and could the country proceeds to the next phase in the fight against the pandemic caused by the new coronavirus.

"Result of the good combat developed so far to contain the spread of covid-19. The end of the state of emergency does not mean the end of the virus. It represents more freedom, but at the same time more responsibility," said Ulisses Correia e Silva, after the President of the Republic, Jorge Carlos Fonseca, having announced on Thursday that he will not extend the state of emergency in Santiago, the only one with active cases of covid-19, so it ends at 23:59 today.

As a way of counting the pandemic, the Government declared a state of calamity on March 26 and three days later a state of emergency was declared. All inter-island passenger connections were suspended - maritime connections were resumed on the seven islands without covid-19 cases on May 11 - and on March 19, all international flights were banned.

"Air connections will resume from June 30, including Santiago," announced the head of government in today's message.

The government official added that the decision is part of the deconfinition plan approved by the Government, "which raises restrictions imposed by the state of calamity, in a programmed way". Right from the restaurant level, until now with limited opening hours until 9:00 pm, which stops happening from June 1st "all over the national territory".

Maritime connections to the island of Boa Vista, which only this month no longer had active cases of covid-19, after accumulating 56 diagnosed since March 19, will resume on June 1, while connections to Santiago will only resume in June 30.

"The island of Santiago, and particularly the city of Praia, continues with the occurrence of positive cases of covid-19. For this reason, some restrictions remain in force, such as the ban on air and sea transportation of passengers with origin and destination. in Santiago, the ban on frequency and access to bathing beaches and the ban on the operation of bars ", announced Ulisses Correia e Silva.

Citing the deconfination plan, which has not yet been revealed, he added that cultural and sporting events, such as festivals, parties and games of different modalities, will only resume in Cape Verde "from October 31".

Despite the end of the state of emergency, the prime minister assured that some protective measures, such as the use of a mask and regular cleaning and disinfection operations, will remain mandatory.

Cape Verde has registered 390 accumulated cases of covid-19, since 19 March, spread over the islands of Santiago (331), Boa Vista (56) and S?o Vicente (03). However, since Tuesday, tests have not been carried out on samples collected by health authorities, due to a problem with reagents at the country's Virology Laboratory.

Of the total, there were four deaths, two patients transferred to their countries and 155 recovered patients, making the country currently have 229 active cases.

"It gives us the idea that the situation is stationary, there is no increase beyond what was happening at least in the last few days. We will wait and see how it is", he said, underlining the fact that today was not no suspicious cases were registered in Praia.
