Burundi can do better in terms of press freedom ", dixit - IWACU
        May 6, 2020 Burundinews

On the occasion of his visit to the Iwacu Press Group this Wednesday, May 6, Claude Bochu, Ambassador of the European Union to Burundi, delivered his analysis on the state of press freedom in Burundi.

Speaking on the current electoral campaign, the European diplomat notes a regression in the democratic debate. "The European Union will not have to position itself immediately. We have to wait for things to continue to progress, without progressing in the right direction, that is the impression we have! "

Ambassador Bochu observes, however, that the presence of several candidates for the presidential chair is an asset for the country. "The debate between different presidential candidates enriches the opinion that people can have."

Asked how he felt about the current state of press freedom in the country, Claude Bochu said: "Burundi can do better in terms of press freedom".
He talks about "progress" being made but at the same time points out that there are "broad areas where things could be improved" and recalls the results of the latest Reporters Without Borders ranking. “Burundi ranks 160th out of 180 countries! This is actually a small drop compared to the previous ranking! "

Starting from there, the European Union’s chief diplomat in Burundi calls for consideration of criticisms “from outside Burundi” regarding press freedom in Burundi. "We cannot both say that Burundi has a bad image on the outside and ignore what is said about Burundi, especially in the area of press freedom! "

Concerning the relations between the European Union and Burundi, Claude Bochu speaks of an “approximation process” in progress and of “a desire on both sides to better understand the expectations and the institutional limitations of some others ”.
And to indicate "an acknowledgment that there are more things that unite us than things that divide us. The ambassador of the Union of Twenty-seven also talks about maintaining cooperation at the local level. "We are keeping a very important cooperation program with the presence of international NGOs and development agencies from our member states. We therefore remain one of the main donors of the country ”.

Faced with Covid-19, which is raging around the world with 19 cases already reported in Burundi, including one death, Mr. Bochu recalled the importance of bilateral ties at such times. "With the direct impact of the coronavirus that will be felt here, Burundi will need all its friends to cope with the difficult economic situation."

Denise Bucumi Nkurunziza, the First Lady of Burundi flew to Nairobi. She embarked on a medical flight of the organization Amref, based in Kenya.
The reasons for this trip are not the subject of any official communication. But according to information from our colleagues at SOS Media Burundi, the plane that transported it had on board a doctor and a nurse.

She arrived in a convoy of 7 vehicles, including 2 pick-ups of soldiers who ensured her safety. With three members of his cabinet, there was also Albert Nasasagare, the deputy chief of state protocol.
                  Local source requesting anonymity
The first lady and her team were not registered. The airport commander took care of placing exit visas in the passports of those concerned.
“There must be something hidden from us, why turn off the tarmac lights and refuse passenger check-in. In any case, it's really strange, ”comments a police source.

For now SOS Media Burundi does not know the reasons for this night evacuation of the First Lady.
What we do know however. The nurse and doctor on board the flight are associated with Kenya Medical Research, an establishment chosen by Africa CDC (Africa Centers for Disease and Prevention), as a center of excellence in the evaluation of Covid-19.
As revealed by SOS M?dias Burundi, on the 21st, the Burundian minister in charge of health had left on an airplane of the same organization . He returned to Bujumbura on Tuesday.

What did Pierre Nkurunziza die from?

As the coronavirus advances in Burundi, some dispute the version that the Burundian president died of a heart attack.

Burundian authorities have long denied the existence of the Covid-19 pandemic in that country and official figures, largely underestimated, now concede around 100 deaths. Added to this is the recent death of President Pierre Nkurunziza, who officially died of a heart attack. Several sources, however, contradict the official position.

Three sources close to political and medical circles in Africa told us that Pierre Nkurunziza died from the coronavirus. A disease that the late president allegedly concealed, even refusing to go to the hospital for treatment.
                          Listen to the audio 08:46
Alexis Sinduhije: "I honestly think that Nkurunziza was killed by the Covid-19."

"I think that Nkurunziza was killed by the Covid-19. The diseases of the heads of state, especially at home, are the best kept secret, maintains the opponent Alexis Sinduhije, the president of the Movement for Solidarity and Democracy (MSD).

                          Manipulations

The Burundian authorities for their part dispute this assertion and speak of manipulation, as a Burundian ambassador posted to a European country explained to us.

                          Alarming situation

Reports of the Covid-19 pandemic from Burundi are alarming.

Indeed, Pierre Nkurunziza had denied the existence of this disease from its onset. He had declared on each of his official outings that his country was protected by God.
                          Listen to the audio 03:52
Dr Benjamin Djoudalbaye: "We stick to the official information in our possession"

A posture that does not facilitate the task of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) of the African Union, according to Dr Benjamin Djoudalbaye, head of political and diplomacy division of health and communication at the center based in Addis Ababa.

Several sources admit that the figures for patients in Burundi are underestimated in the absence of real information.

Pacifique Nininahazwe, the president of the Forum for Consciousness and Development (Focode) is also worried about the evolution of the pandemic in Burundi.

"The coronavirus kills many Burundians, in total silence, in total denial by the Burundian authorities. We would like the death of Nkurunziza to be a moment of start on this serious pandemic in Burundi. And we ask for a real investigation into the reasons for the death of president ", says human rights activist at DW.

A source close to the Burundian government said it feared a serious health situation. The contaminations would multiply. If we do not impose screening, the days ahead will be gloomy in terms of health, fear this source.

As of June 12, 2020, Burundi has recorded 94 cases of infected people, one death and 71 people healed, according to the African Union Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Burundi expelled the WHO representative, Dr. Walter Mulombo, and three others from his staff in mid-May. Burundian authorities have accused them of extrapolating the actual number of people affected by Covid-19.
