726 cases of Covid-19: Bissau, Cumura and B?r foci of infection
This is a great opportunity for someone looking to work in a fast paced environment.
        Text by: Muss? Bald?

The Center for Emergency Health Operations in Guinea-Bissau on Sunday increased to 726 the number of registered cases of Covid-19 in the country.

The numbers of people infected with Covid-19 continue to increase in Guinea-Bissau. 726 people are infected with the new coronavirus and three people lost their lives due to the disease. Guinean authorities want to isolate the city of Bissau, the main focus of the infection.

Of the 94 samples analyzed yesterday, 9 May, at the public health laboratory in Bissau, 85 tested positive for Covid-19.

Guinea-Bissau thus adds 726 cases of infection by the disease, of which three deaths, about 80 people considered asymptomatic in isolation in two hotel units and 16 undergoing treatment at Sim?o Mendes hospital.

26 people are reported to have recovered, but health officials remain concerned about the way most Guineans face the disease.

The rituals of crowding people, namely funerals and social gatherings continue throughout the country.

Bissau, Cumura and B?r are the main sources of infection. The situation tends to complicate with each passing day, for example, at the moment, of the 16 people being treated at Sim?o Mendes hospital, five are in serious condition, as they are people with other pathologies. Two of these five patients are in need of induced oxygen, a product that is scarce in the country.

Doctor Dion?sio Cumba, president of the Emergency Health Operational Committee, says that cases of infection will continue to rise until there is a change in mentality among Guineans.

Dion?sio Cumba even proposes a total isolation of Bissau from the rest of the country, preventing the exit or entry of people from other parts.

"Five new cases were registered in Ecomib military personnel. The analyzes were made by a medical team from Senegal, but the data are added to those from Guinea-Bissau, because those military personnel are in the country," said the coordinator of the Emergency Operations Center (COES), Dion?sio Cumba.

According to the Guinean doctor, the National Public Health Laboratory did not carry out analyzes in the last 24 hours due to the lack of plaques, which must arrive on the plane that carries the body of the former Guinean President Serifo Nhamadjo, and which should arrive in Bissau today.

Guinean President Umaro Sissoco Embal? ordered in early March, after taking office, the cantonment of the interposing force of the Economic Community of West African States (Ecomib), which has been stationed in the country since 2012, following a coup of State.

The military force's mission ended at the end of March, but the closure of borders in the context of combating the covid-19 prevented it from leaving the country.

Regarding the most worrying cases, Dion?sio Cumba said that there is a covid-19 contamination registered in the Bafat? region.

"This is a 40-year-old woman who went to that area. The health team in the Bafat? area has been working since yesterday [Thursday], she has already collected five samples from people who were close to the woman, but there is a lot of resistance by the woman's family members, who refuse to collaborate ", he said.

In relation to Bissau, the number of people admitted to the Sim?o Mendes National Hospital was 18 people, 11 of whom were in need of oxygen.

At Cumura hospital, 21 people are hospitalized and there is a lack of oxygen.

Regarding people who are confined to hotels, the doctor said that an effort is being made to send people to their homes.

"There is still some difficulty in feeding, but today things are regularized," he said.

Dion?sio Cumba kept the number of recovered at 42 and fatalities at six.

As part of the fight against the pandemic, the Guinean President, Umaro Sissoco Embal?, decreed a state of emergency, until May 26, and the curfew between 20:00 and 06:00 in the country.

In addition to those measures, people can only move between 07:00 and 14:00 local time.

In Africa, there are 3,089 confirmed deaths, with more than 99,000 infected in 54 countries, according to the latest pandemic statistics on that continent.

Among African countries that have Portuguese as their official language, Guinea-Bissau leads in number of infections (1,114 cases and six deaths), followed by Equatorial Guinea (719 cases and seven dead), Cape Verde (362 cases and three deaths), S?o Tom? and Pr?ncipe (269 cases and 11 deaths), Mozambique (162 cases) and Angola (60 infected and three dead).

The Portuguese-speaking country most affected by the pandemic is Brazil, with more than 20,000 deaths and more than 310,500 infections.

Globally, according to a report by the AFP news agency, the covid-19 pandemic has already claimed almost 330,000 deaths and infected more than 5.1 million people in 196 countries and territories.
