A nosocomial infection is rampant in the operating room of the Mongi Slim hospital

We learned from hospital sources that the operating room of the hospital Mongi Slim La Marsa suffers since a few days, a serious infection known in the medical area of "nosocomial disease."

According to the same source, two deaths were reported so far, while a third case raises significant concerns without serious action taken to address them.

We learn, moreover, that the Committee members said operating block have sent a letter addressed to the Minister of Health without result, while according to the same committee, a temporary closure measurement of the block, newly installed, should have be taken preventively.

It must be said that, according to sources at the hospital in question, hygiene and cleanliness conditions are far from optimal since, for example, the trash remains on the ground in front of the block more than three hours during.

A concrete and urgent action by the Minister of Health is expected.

    Details from CHU Mongi Slim

Following the article published on the electronic site of Express Fm Thursday, September 10 about a hospital infection which is reportedly rampant in the operating room of the Mongi Slim hospital, and allegedly behind two cases of death, the critical state of a third patient and the closing of the ICU, and in my capacity as Chairman of the Medical Committee of the University Hospital Mongi Slim, allow me to make the following clarifications:

    - According to our initial investigations, none of the deaths mentioned in your article is proven linked to nosocomial infection contracted in the operating room.

However, I would like to remind that deaths sometimes occur postoperatively in patients in very precarious state, undergoing complex and very debilitating surgeries that prolonged stay in intensive care.

    - A series of bacteriological samples taken from patients operated in operating blocks of CHU Mongi Slim allowed to isolate multi resistant bacterium. Standard measures in such cases were immediately taken. As precautionary measure not to jeopardize the safety of patients, the surgical activity was suspended to conduct a comprehensive audit of surgical activities. This audit includes the completion of bacteriological samples in all sectors of the operating room, surgical services and rehabilitation, but also the evaluation of the mode of operation in terms of respect of hospital hygiene rules for all stakeholders in the sectors concerned. The purpose of this audit is to implement any corrective measures in case of anomalies.

    - It should also be noted that the ICU is functional and no deaths related to a viral infection has been recorded. For information, two patients were admitted to the service on September 11th (the day after the publication of your article), one of them was transferred to Charles Nicole hospital for surgery due the cessation of activities of our operating blocs.

We promise to keep you informed of the results of the audit undertaken in the mentioned services and we can tell you that we take all necessary measures for hygiene in our facility to ensure the safety of our patients.

    Professor Mohamed Sami Mebazaa
President of the Medical Committee of the University Hospital Mongi Slim

Editor's note: According to the above-mentioned information, the head of Mongi Slim University Hospital of the Medical Committee confirmed the existence of two deaths mentioned in our article, confirms, after a series of bacteriological samples taken from patients operated in operating blocks CHU Mongi Slim, a multi-resistant bacteria that has been isolated and confirmed that the activity of the block was suspended after the publication of our article.

In any case, we welcome the reaction of Mongi Slim Hospital officials who have taken the necessary measures to prevent possible future risks.

"Safety and security don't just happen, they are the result of collective consensus and public investment. We owe our children, the most vulnerable citizens in our society, a life free of violence and fear."
