Declaration of the first case of MPOX in Gabon

    published 15 hours ago , on 08/22/2024

STATEMENT BY THE MINISTER OF HEALTH, Pr Adrien MOUGOUGOU

"Since the declaration of the Mpox (monkeypox) epidemic in the DRC in April 2024, the epidemic has become large-scale, affecting several African and even European countries, and has recently been classified as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) by the World Health Organization (WHO).

The Ministry of Health, supported by its partners, has put in place measures to strengthen preparedness and prevention against the importation of Mpox into Gabon, in particular by developing its preparedness and response plan for a possible Mpox epidemic, strengthening and putting its epidemiological surveillance system on maximum alert, acquiring the capacity to make the diagnosis at the national level and activating its multisectoral coordination mechanism.

Today, August 22, 2024, the Government declares the first case of Mpox in Gabon.

Indeed, since our surveillance system was put on alert, 6 suspected cases meeting the case definition of Mpox have been notified, isolated, treated and collected. Of the 6 samples taken and transmitted to the National Public Health Laboratory, one (1) sample tested positive for Mpox.

This is a 30-year-old compatriot, living in Gabon and having stayed for the last 2 weeks in Uganda, a country impacted by the epidemic. A few days after his arrival, he presented with fever and fatigue, followed by a generalized skin rash, going to the hospital on August 21, he was isolated and taken care of due to clinical suspicion. The patient is in good general condition and the identification of contact persons is underway.

Consequently, the Government calls on the population to exercise vigilance and serenity, not to give in to panic and to practice the recommended hygiene measures.

    Thank you."

Lambaréné: Twenty Red Cross volunteers in training on the response to monkeypox (Mpox)

Writing By EDITORIAL STAFF 20 hours since

LAMBARÉNÉ, October 10, 2024 (AGP) – Twenty (20) volunteers from the Gabonese Red Cross have benefited, since last Tuesday in Lambaréné, capital of the Moyen-Ogooué province (Center of the country), and until Friday, from a training seminar on the response to monkeypox (Mpox), officially declared by the Ministry of Health, noted the AGP.

The four (4) day training seminar, from Tuesday October 8 to Friday October 11, 2024, is organized by the Gabonese Red Cross, in collaboration with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, (CR-CR) at the headquarters of the Lambaréné Red Cross committee.

Its aim is to provide these 20 volunteers with the necessary basics on monkeypox (Mpox), so that they can in turn be able to raise awareness among the population about this scourge at the end of the training.

According to the provincial secretary of the Red Cross (CR) of Moyen-Ogooué, Oumar Habiba, the latter will be deployed on the ground after this seminar for awareness campaigns among local populations.

This involves explaining to them that the disease is indeed present in the country, given the two cases tested positive by the Ministry of Health.

They have fortunately survived, according to the provincial secretary of the Moyen-Ogooué Red Cross, Oumar Habiba.

The measures required to avoid the risk of contamination were also explained to the recipients.

Similarly, the issue of observing health hygiene rules will be raised with these populations when the time comes, assured Ms. Habiba.

Overall, the ultimate ambition of the Gabonese Red Cross, which is working with the support of the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent, is to train one hundred (100) volunteers across three targeted provinces, namely sixty (60) in Estuaire, twenty (20) in Franceville and twenty (20) in Lambaréné.

The choice of these three provinces could be explained, according to her, by their strategic position.
