published 15 hours ago , on 08/22/2024

STATEMENT BY THE MINISTER OF HEALTH, Pr Adrien MOUGOUGOU
"Since the declaration of the Mpox (monkeypox) epidemic in the DRC in April 2024, the epidemic has become large-scale, affecting several African and even European countries, and has recently been classified as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) by the World Health Organization (WHO).
The Ministry of Health, supported by its partners, has put in place measures to strengthen preparedness and prevention against the importation of Mpox into Gabon, in particular by developing its preparedness and response plan for a possible Mpox epidemic, strengthening and putting its epidemiological surveillance system on maximum alert, acquiring the capacity to make the diagnosis at the national level and activating its multisectoral coordination mechanism.
Today, August 22, 2024, the Government declares the first case of Mpox in Gabon.
Indeed, since our surveillance system was put on alert, 6 suspected cases meeting the case definition of Mpox have been notified, isolated, treated and collected. Of the 6 samples taken and transmitted to the National Public Health Laboratory, one (1) sample tested positive for Mpox.
This is a 30-year-old compatriot, living in Gabon and having stayed for the last 2 weeks in Uganda, a country impacted by the epidemic. A few days after his arrival, he presented with fever and fatigue, followed by a generalized skin rash, going to the hospital on August 21, he was isolated and taken care of due to clinical suspicion. The patient is in good general condition and the identification of contact persons is underway.
Consequently, the Government calls on the population to exercise vigilance and serenity, not to give in to panic and to practice the recommended hygiene measures.
Thank you."
