Abidjan, July 19, 2022 - "No case of monkeypox has been detected in Côte d'Ivoire to date, since the notification of the disease, in May 2022, by Member States of the World Health Organization. According to Dr. Daouda Coulibaly, “monkey pox or monkeypox virus infection is an infectious viral disease. It is an emerging disease with epidemic potential. Monkeypox is also a viral zoonosis, that is to say a disease which is transmitted to humans by animals”. His symptoms, he pointed out, include headache, muscle aches, fever, rash, lymph nodes, etc.
The deputy director of the INHP indicated that monkeypox is contracted either by transmission from animal to man following direct contact with the biological fluids of already infected animals or by handling infected animals, or by human-to-human transmission resulting from direct and prolonged contact with the bodily fluids of sick people or by touching surfaces contaminated by them.
It can still be transmitted by respiratory droplets, by close contact during sexual intercourse, from mother to child and by nosocomial transmission.
Continuing, Dr. Daouda Coulibaly indicated that several factors can promote the occurrence of monkeypox. He cited, among other things, the absence of vaccination, contact with wild animals, migration to endemic areas, promiscuity and living in the forest.
According to him, all age groups are likely to have the disease and the subjects at risk are healthcare and laboratory personnel, unvaccinated subjects, relatives of affected patients and subjects in endemic areas. .
The Deputy Director of the INHP assured that in Côte d'Ivoire, where the disease already appeared in the 1970s, both in animals and in humans, reinforced surveillance measures have been taken for its early detection, with a view to responding to a possible epidemic.
Citing some of these measures, he mentioned the surveillance of the disease at borders and in hospitals, the care of the sick and their isolation, awareness of preventive measures and gestures (washing hands, avoid unprotected contact with animals and sick people, etc.) and informing populations about the disease.
From January 1 to July 4, 2022, 6,027 confirmed cases of monkeypox have been recorded worldwide, including 173 in Africa for three deaths.
Ghana, a neighboring country to Côte d'Ivoire, has nineteen cases of monkey pox. Globally, this emerging disease spread rapidly, in early May 2022, to countries where the virus had not previously been detected.
