Senegal: what we know about suspected cases of monkey pox

Suspected cases of monkeypox reported in Senegal have come back negative.

While monkey pox is gaining ground, suspected cases have been reported in Senegal. But fortunately the country seems spared from this viral zoonosis. Suspected cases examined in the laboratory of the Pasteur Institute in Dakar came back negative. No cases have been confirmed at this time. These suspected cases were detected by health workers based on clinical signs.

Since early May 2022, monkeypox has been spreading. If this viral zoonosis (an infection transmissible from animals to humans or from humans to animals) is usually rife in certain countries of West Africa and Central Africa, Senegal is for the hour spared. To date, 21 zoonotic diseases have been detected on Senegalese soil, but only six of them are considered priorities. These are Rabies, Zoonotic Avian Influenza, Bovine Tuberculosis, Anthrax, Rift Valley Fever and Ebola/Marburg Virus Diseases.

It should be noted that monkey pox is not part of the list of re-emerging diseases considered a priority by the Senegalese authorities. Even if the disease is on our doorstep... But Senegal has nevertheless strengthened border control, surveillance of entry points and groups considered to be at risk and the establishment of a stock of vaccines in relation to the WHO office in Dakar. Vaccination is not yet scheduled in Senegal.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), suspected or positive cases have already been recorded in West Africa: these are Guinea, Ghana and Nigeria. 36 cases have been confirmed in Nigeria, 10 in the Democratic Republic of Congo, 8 in the Central African Republic, 3 in Cameroon and 2 in the Republic of Congo.

"Safety and security don't just happen, they are the result of collective consensus and public investment. We owe our children, the most vulnerable citizens in our society, a life free of violence and fear."
    -Nelson Mandela
