      By Kinshasa editorial staff
      November 20, 2021 at 2:15 PM

The Minister of Public Health, Hygiene and Prevention Jean-Jacques Mbungani announced, during the meeting of the council of ministers, held on Friday November 19, the appearance of an unknown disease called Monkey Pox in the province of Maniema, Kibombo territory, more specifically in the Tunda health zone.

The epidemiological surveillance cell of the Ministry of Health which received the alert indicates that this unknown disease "Monkey Pox" manifests itself by high fevers and skin rash.

According to the Minister of Health, since the onset of this disease, there have already been 69 cases and 12 deaths with a fatality of 17%.

The most affected health area is Utshu with 29 cases and 5 deaths followed by the Dikululu health area with 15 cases and 4 deaths.

To do this, the government organized the management of cases, the supply of drugs as well as the sensitization of the local populations on the definitions of the cases and on the measures to be taken.

"The response device is operational," reassured the Minister of Health, quoted by government spokesman Patrick Muyaya, in his report.

The Ministry of Health does not say more about this disease. But according to our research Monkeypox was discovered in 1958 when outbreaks of a smallpox-like disease occurred in crab-eating macaque monkeys kept for research.

Monkey Pox-like disease threatens Kibombo population in Maniema

Kinshasa23-11-2021Health - Already confronted with measles, the population of Kibombo in Maniema is facing the Monkey Pox which is already causing deaths.

A monkey pox-like disease similar to measles threatens the Kibombo population in Maniema province.

The provincial Minister of Health, Kibungi Mutanga, who announced this information on Monday, explained: “According to the investigations, it seems that there is a hunter who brought game that is to say a dead monkey who had eruptions and once the inhabitants had consumed this dead monkey there was now the appearance of phenomena which they did not understand; generalized rash so pimples all over the body as well as fever and people began to die little by little ”.

One hundred and nineteen cases, including nineteen deaths have been identified since November 4 in the village of Wanga, in the health area of Weta, in the territory of Kibombo since November 4, he said.

For this member of the Provincial Executive of Maniema who recognizes that his province is also facing the measles epidemic which has already affected the health zones of Kunda, Kasongo and Lusangi, we must wait for the results of the laboratory to confirm or not if it is Monkey Pox. Hence, faced with all these two diseases, he invites the partners of the DRC to come to the aid of its population.

Confirming also that no case of Monkey Pox has been recorded for two days in this health zone, he warns, however, that every day cases of measles are recorded. From where does he estimate: "Really there is need that the providers return to treat the population and for the partners it is to come to our aid. Without the partners, the province is unable to overcome these problems.

According to msdmanuals.com, simian pox, a rare disease, is caused by the simian pox virus (monkeypox) which is structurally related to the smallpox virus and causes a similar, but less severe disease.

The simian pox virus, along with the smallpox virus, is part of the orthopoxvirus group, adds the same source, which notes that “Despite its name, non-human primates are not reservoirs for the simian pox virus. Although the reservoir is unknown, the main candidates are small rodents (eg squirrels) in the tropical forests of Africa, mainly in West and Central Africa ”.

Human disease is observed in Africa sporadically and sometimes endemic. Most of the reported cases have been recorded in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Since 2016, confirmed cases have also been reported in Sierra Leone, Liberia, Central African Republic, Republic of Congo and Nigeria, which has experienced the largest recent epidemic, specifies msdmanuals.com which also notes that An increase recent 20-fold incidence would be due to the cessation of smallpox vaccination in 1980; people who received the smallpox vaccine even 25 years ago have a reduced risk of simian pox. The cases of simian pox in Africa are also increasing because the population encroaches more and more on the habitats of animals carrying the virus ”.

DRC: 191 cases of Monkeypox already recorded in Maniema, including 24 deaths

                    Friday December 10th, 2021 - 08:49 AM

The interim governor of Maniema, Alfani Idrissa Mangala, officially declared this Thursday, December 9 the Monkeypox epidemic in the province. He announced that 24 deaths have already been recorded since the onset of the disease in the Tundu health zone, in Kibombo territory in the south of Maniema province.

“The Tunda health zone in Kibombo territory has already reported 191 cases including 24 deaths from Monkeypox. During the 40th epidemiological week, samples taken from the health areas of Wenga, Utshu and Weta were sent to the National Institute for Biomedical Research for analyzes, the results of which have just confirmed the epidemic ”, declared the governor ai.

The Governor ad interim of the province requested the support of the central government and technical and financial partners to fight against this epidemic.

"We call on the population to consult the nearest health center in case of fever, rash and others in order to prevent disease," he added.

Last November, the Minister of Health in Maniema province reported 12 cases of Monkeypox death in his province. The lethality was estimated at 17% for a total of 69 identified cases.

“For the past three years, we have experienced cases of Monkeypox in almost every province. But for the moment, the most vulnerable provinces are Sankuru, Mongala, Mai-Ndombe, Equateur, Tshuapa and Bas-Uélé. These are the provinces which are almost red, they report the case of Monkeypox every day, had told ACTUALITE.CD, Chadrack Simba Kalume, epidemiologist at the ministry of public health.

Mokey Pox or monkey pox is a zoonosis, it is transmitted from animals to humans, before transmission becomes human-to-human; that is to say in rural areas where the main occupations are fishing, hunting and breeding, when the one who caught the monkey pox by consuming primates, and rodents found already dead in the forest, is in physical contact with other people, it has the ability to spread the infection around it.

Symptoms of this disease are often rash, fatigue, and difficulty breathing. But there is not an appropriate management, as it is of animal origin, the management is symptomatic.

on 9 December 2021 in Tunda health district in Kibombo territory
in Maniema province following disease confirmation at the
National Institute for Biomedical Research (INRB). Seven of the 17

positive for orthopoxvirus, the virus responsible for Monkeypox
disease. This outbreak follows another that occurred in 13 health
districts across seven provinces (Equateur, Haut-Uele, MaiNdombe,
Maniema, Mongala, Sud-Ubangi and Tshopo), with 2
918 suspected cases and 79 deaths (case fatality ration (CFR) =
2.7%) reported from week 1 to week 47 (ending 28 November
                        2021).

with 43 cases reported each week. After this peak, the number of
cases declined in week 48 (ending 5 December 2021) and week

district. To date, only Tunda health district has reported cases
across the Maniema province. Cases have been reported from six
health areas: Utshu health area with the highest number of cases
and deaths (90 cases; 11 deaths), followed by the health areas
of Weta (34 cases; 5 deaths), Kembeyule (29 cases; 1 death),
Dikululu (23 cases; 4 deaths), Ongeri (19 cases; 3 deaths) and

Most of the deaths are among the 12–59-months age group (11
deaths), followed by 5-15 years (7 deaths) and then over 15 years

A local response committee has been set up under the
leadership of the local traditional leader.

The technical surveillance unit of Tunda health district was
activated, and the line list updates are ongoing as well as the
                        community case finding activities.

Five treatment centres have been set up in Weta, Ohambe,
Dembo, Difuma I and Koso for case management and sample
collection to be confirmed at INRB.

A communication plan has been developed and risk
communication activities including messaging on the
disease through local churches and schools are underway.

                        SITUATION INTERPRETATION

Monkeypox case was first detected in the Democratic Republic
                        of the Congo in 1970.

Since 2005, it remains the country that reports the highest
number of cases of over 1 000 per year. In 2021, the Democratic
Republic of the Congo has registered two monkeypox outbreaks,
however the ongoing health workers strike may jeopardize the
outbreak response activities in Maniema province.

                        PROPOSED ACTIONS

The required efforts should be deployed to ensure that
patients are isolated, necessary measures to prevent
airborne transmission are taken and whenever possible only
vaccinated health care providers should take care of the
                        monkeypox patients.

Risk communication activities as well as community
mobilization, active case finding, contact tracing and case
                        management should continue

Efforts should be deployed to end health workers strike with
aim of resuming normal health care activities as quickly as
                        possible.
