Covid-19: medical staff call for reinforcements in the face of the resurgence of cases

    By Nafiisah Peerbaye
    APR 29, 2023

With 104 active cases of Covid-19 according to the Government Information Service (GIS), the Nursing Administrator of New ENT Hospital sent a letter on April 24 to the Regional Health Director of Victoria Hospital asking for additional staff. “If you could provide a list of scheduled staff with contact details and in the event that the scheduled staff are unable to attend the service of new staff at the ENT hospital, a replacement should be provided by the hospital appointed. A 'pattern' was designated between April 29 until May 3 ,” the document reads.

With 1,029,393 people who have been vaccinated with the first dose, and 992,536 who have had their second dose, Dr. Soobaraj Sok Appadu, director of the New ENT maintains that Mauritians must be vaccinated. “At the beginning, we saw ourselves facing confinement, with the wearing of a mask since we had not had a treatment but with the evolution, we see the importance of vaccination. But here, I can say that we are in a comfortable period” , explains Dr Sok Appadu. To add: “The advice I would have liked to give is to wear the mask as soon as you have the slightest symptom. This, to avoid any spread between colleagues, family and others.

Note that two deaths have been recorded since last week: a 39-year-old man with comorbidities but who was “fully vaccinated” and another 75 year-old who had not been immunized but who presented health concerns. Another assessment: 22 Covid-19 patients are in the “general ward”, including six who do not have a vaccine.

    Covid-19: Kailesh Jagutpal reassures

Do not panic despite the increase in cases. This is the main message that the Minister of Health delivered during his conference yesterday, from his office.

From the outset, he explained that the situation is being closely monitored and that the number of cases as well as the results of the sequencing are communicated every week. This is how the XBB.1.5 and XBB.1.16 subvariants were detected in Mauritius. “This variant follows the trend of the previous ones. That is to say, it is more contagious but less severe and, in time, will replace the other variants., said the Minister. This is why, according to him, one should not panic, but continue to follow the recommendations of the ministry, namely to wear masks, wash your hands, avoid crowds and make sure you have been vaccinated against Covid- 19. The Minister also recalled that the increase in cases linked to these variants is not unique to Mauritius. In all the countries where they are present, the same increase has been observed. And if we follow the trend of Omicron variants, which have demonstrated increased contagion, the wave should pass in about three months. Moreover, the majority of experts agree that the virus is now endemic.

The Minister of Health once again emphasized vaccination, especially for the population at risk. He pointed out that one of the two people who died of Covid-19 this week was not vaccinated. At this time, only the Johnson & Johnson vaccine is available. However, according to several studies that have been published, the first vaccines, developed three years ago for the original virus, have very little, if any, effect on the variants that have since emerged. Dr Kailesh Jagutpal said there is no specific date for the delivery of bivalent vaccines from Pfizer. “Any vaccine confers some dose of immunity.”

    May 1 gathering maintained
“To say that the increase in cases is linked to the May 1 rallies is obviously in bad faith ,” said the minister. He reiterated that the variant is more contagious but not more severe, and that certain precautions should be taken at the individual level as well. After that ? Are restrictions envisaged in the coming months, as the municipal elections approach? No, replied Kailesh Jagutpal, explaining, once again, that there is no danger in the face of the current sub-variants.
