      ... What is happening?

On January 21, 2020, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Washington State Department of Health announced the first case of 2019 Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV) in the United States in Washington state.

The patient recently returned from Wuhan City, Hubei Province, China, where an outbreak of 2019 novel coronavirus has been ongoing since December.

2019 novel coronavirus is concerning because it’s a new strain and can cause pneumonia.

We will be updating this page daily with the number of confirmed cases and people who are currently being monitored due to having close contact with a confirmed case.

We now know that COVID-19 is here to stay for the foreseeable future. It’s important to understand how to live our lives while keeping ourselves, loved ones and community as safe as possible. How can we do that? By using all the tools we’ve learned so far: staying up to date with COVID-19 vaccines, getting tested and staying home if sick or exposed, wearing a mask in crowds, and keeping our distance.

They haven't heard from their family in 3 days. Their aunt and uncle have the virus and their parents are quarantined. Food and supplies are running out. They are so upset they closed their business and won't be celebrating the holiday. They are going to collect supplies to send to Wuhan.

Three UW students in Seattle screened for novel coronavirus

          Victor Balta
          UW News

The University of Washington was notified by Public Health – Seattle & King County (PHSKC) that three students from the UW’s Seattle campus are being screened for the novel (new) coronavirus. These three students recently traveled to Wuhan, China, and developed symptoms after returning. One person lives off campus, and that student’s test was negative for infection. Two students live in on-campus housing and are awaiting their test results. These are not confirmed cases. The two students awaiting test results are being monitored by PHSKC and have moved to isolated housing until they are cleared by PHSKC.

While awaiting test results, the University is working closely with PHSKC to ensure precautions are taken to minimize risk to the campus and others in the community. Testing is a precautionary measure, and PHSKC anticipates most persons tested will not have the infection. None of the UW students were hospitalized, and all are doing very well.

As of January 26, there is only one case of confirmed novel coronavirus infection in Washington state. It is in Snohomish County and is not related to the UW community.

We are asking everyone — and, importantly, students in communal living situations, including on-campus housing, fraternities and sororities — to take steps we always recommended to protect yourself and others, and to prevent the spread of respiratory viruses, especially during cold and flu season:
          • Stay home when you are sick to prevent others from being exposed to your illness.
          • If you see a health care provider for fever and cough, ask for a surgical mask to help prevent spread of infection when in the health care setting.
          • Cover your mouth and nose with your elbow or a tissue when you cough or sneeze, and immediately dispose of the tissue.
          • Wash your hands often and avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
          • Clean and disinfect surfaces that are frequently touched.

If you have recently traveled to Wuhan, China, (within 14 days) and are having fever and respiratory symptoms (such as coughing or shortness of breath), contact your primary care provider. Call your health care provider before arriving so they can prepare for your visit.
          UW-related travel

This coronavirus outbreak began in December 2019 in Wuhan, China. A number of countries, including the United States, have been actively screening incoming travelers from China. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has raised their travel advisory to a level 3: CDC recommends that travelers avoid all nonessential travel to Hubei Province, China, including Wuhan. If you have questions about UW-related travel to or from an area with confirmed cases of coronavirus, please contact the UW Office of Global Affairs.

          Coronavirus information

Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses, some causing respiratory illness in people and others circulating among animals. Rarely, animal coronaviruses can evolve and infect people and then spread among people. Several coronaviruses cause the common cold. Other types of previous coronavirus outbreaks have included severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS). The CDC states that the current risk to the American public of becoming infected with this novel coronavirus is low.

How to get additional reliable information
The University’s Advisory Committee on Communicable Diseases is monitoring the outbreak in coordination with PHSKC. The committee will provide updated information to the campus community as the situation evolves.

Update on statewide response to 2019 novel coronavirus

OLYMPIA – As the investigation into 2019 novel coronavirus continues, the Washington State Department of Health is sharing important data points to help the public understand and track the progress and the work being done statewide. The immediate health risk from novel coronavirus to Washington residents is still considered low at this time.

Across the state, we have identified 8 persons under investigation (PUI). A person under investigation (PUI) is an ill person with possible 2019 n-CoV infection who is in the process of being tested.

The current number of close contacts stands at 63. This is the number of people potentially exposed to the virus who are being actively monitored in Washington state. A close contact is a person who has been within about 6 feet of a person with confirmed 2019 n-CoV infection for a prolonged period of time or has had direct contact with secretions from a person with confirmed 2019 n-CoV infection. The definition used in Washington is the same as the CDC definition. We plan to update the number of close contacts daily at 3pm here on the Department of Health website.

We will update our website daily with:
            • The number of confirmed 2019 novel coronavirus cases in Washington.
            • The number of people who are currently being monitored due to having close contact with a person who is confirmed to have 2019 novel coronavirus.
            • The number of ill persons under investigation (PUI) for possible infection.

The patient with confirmed 2019 n-CoV is still in satisfactory condition and in the same unit at Providence Regional Medical Center in Everett. Providence is coordinating with the CDC, the Department of Health, and the Snohomish Health District to monitor and treat the patient. No discharge date has been set.

The 2019 novel coronavirus is concerning because it’s a new strain and can cause pneumonia. The Washington State Department of Health wants to ensure that the public is aware of the ways we are working to keep the public informed every day. The multi-agency public response to Washington’s first case of 2019 novel coronavirus is ongoing, as these teams partner to learn more about this emerging issue.

There are steps people can take to reduce their risk of getting any viral respiratory infections. These include:
            • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds
            • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands
            • Avoid close contact with people who are sick
            • Clean and disinfect objects and surfaces

It is also important for people to stay at home away from others if they are sick and for people to cover their mouth and nose with a tissue when they cough or sneeze, then throw the tissue in the trash and wash their hands

DOH has established a call center to address questions from the public. If you have questions about what is happening in Washington state, how the virus is spread, and what to do if you have symptoms, please call 1-800-525-0127 and press #.

Has anyone seen anything about this persons travel in China? He is stated as returning from Wuhan but his sequence data has been uploaded and it is most closely related to a cluster in Guangdong and some way from the Wuhan sequences. While all the sequences are still very close it would be useful in determining if we are beginning to see tentative host adaption, the other close sequences are from HK and USA-IL not China.

                      MetricsSummary

An outbreak of novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) that began in Wuhan, China, has spread rapidly, with cases now confirmed in multiple countries. We report the first case of 2019-nCoV infection confirmed in the United States and describe the identification, diagnosis, clinical course, and management of the case, including the patient’s initial mild symptoms at presentation with progression to pneumonia on day 9 of illness. This case highlights the importance of close coordination between clinicians and public health authorities at the local, state, and federal levels, as well as the need for rapid dissemination of clinical information related to the care of patients with this emerging infection. On December 31, 2019, China reported a cluster of cases of pneumonia in people associated with the Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market in Wuhan, Hubei Province.1On January 7, 2020, Chinese health authorities confirmed that this cluster was associated with a novel coronavirus, 2019-nCoV.2 Although cases were originally reported to be associated with exposure to the seafood market in Wuhan, current epidemiologic data indicate that person-to-person transmission of 2019-nCoV is occurring.3-6 As of January 30, 2020, a total of 9976 cases had been reported in at least 21 countries,7 including the first confirmed case of 2019-nCoV infection in the United States, reported on January 20, 2020. Investigations are under way worldwide to better understand transmission dynamics and the spectrum of clinical illness. This report describes the epidemiologic and clinical features of the first case of 2019-nCoV infection confirmed in the United States.

                      Case Report

On January 19, 2020, a 35-year-old man presented to an urgent care clinic in Snohomish County, Washington, with a 4-day history of cough and subjective fever. On checking into the clinic, the patient put on a mask in the waiting room. After waiting approximately 20 minutes, he was taken into an examination room and underwent evaluation by a provider. He disclosed that he had returned to Washington State on January 15 after traveling to visit family in Wuhan, China. The patient stated that he had seen a health alert from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) about the novel coronavirus outbreak in China and, because of his symptoms and recent travel, decided to see a health care provider.

Snohomish County man with novel coronavirus discharged from hospital

                          Feb. 3, 2020 at 12:46 pm Updated Feb. 3, 2020 at 1:04 pm

However, people who have family members at the Fircrest RHC, also called Fircrest School, are concerned. The campus supports about 200 people with intellectual or developmental disabilities.

“I’m emotionally involved because this is my daughter’s home,” said Chris Hartzog, during the question-and-answer portion of a community meeting on Friday afternoon. “I feel like this is a very bad choice -- it’s a highly populated area. You’ve got some of the most fragile and vulnerable people in the state living here."

Wiesman responded that the state is still looking for other possible sites, and added that one positive of RVs is that if another location is identified, the site can be easily moved.
