‘We’re running out of jurors’: Civil trials delayed in King County Superior Court due to coronavirus

With fewer people reporting for jury duty during the novel coronavirus outbreak, King County Superior Court judges are contacting attorneys involved in pending civil trials to let them know it could be 60 to 90 days before jurors are available to hear those cases, said Presiding Judge Jim Rogers.

Jurors in high-risk groups for contracting COVID-19, the disease caused by the virus — including pregnant women, people with underlying medical conditions and people age 60 or older — have been told they aren’t required to report for jury duty. Earlier this week, Rogers said of the 200 prospective jurors who usually report each day, about 95 have been showing up who don’t meet the court’s criteria to be released from duty...

Update: COVID-19 in King County for March 12, 2020

      March 12, 2020
      Summary

Public Health has issued guidance for retail establishments and schools. We are reporting 36 new cases today, bringing the confirmed case count total in King County to 270. In addition, one new death is reported, bringing the total deaths to 27.

      Story

Yesterday, a state proclamation and local orders were issued aimed at minimizing the risk of the spread of coronavirus. Despite these rules that limit gatherings, residents will continue to need services. Retail businesses and service operators such as grocery stores, drug stores, movie theaters, restaurants, and other retail establishments may and should stay open, as long as they follow guidance aimed at maximizing excellent hygiene, social distancing, and cleaning. Retail establishments should follow guidance for retail businesses and service operators.
COVID-19 is spreading in King County, with hundreds of cases reported to date. We expect the case count to double every 5-7 days. A key Public Health goal is to minimize the number of people who get seriously ill at the same time, so that those who are at risk for severe illness are able to get the care they need. If too many people get very sick all at once, this will put an unmanageable burden on our health care system. If that happens, people requiring care may not be able to get it when they need it. Every King County resident has a responsibility to each other to make sure our community collectively lessens the impact of this disease.
Anyone who is sick should stay home. Anyone who develops symptoms of COVID-19, as well as their close contacts, should follow Public Health guidance addressing what to do if you have confirmed or suspected COVID-19 or are worried that you do.
Public Health has many COVID-19 resources for the general public, the business community, workplaces and employers, travelers, healthcare professionals and links to information at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Washington state Department of Health. See our website with additional information available on the Public Health Insider.
      Case updates

Public Health – Seattle & King County is reporting the following confirmed cases and deaths due to COVID-19 through 11:59 p.m. on 3/11/20
      • 270 confirmed cases (up 36 from yesterday)
      • 27 confirmed deaths (up 1 from yesterday)
The one death being reported today is in a man in his 80s. He died at EvergreenHealth on 3/11/20.
Of the 27 deaths reported, 22 are associated with Life Care Center of Kirkland.
      Isolation and quarantine facilities update

For those who cannot self-isolate or quarantine in their own home and for those who do not have a home, King County is creating isolation and quarantine sites at multiple locations. Isolation and quarantine is a proven public health practice for reducing the spread of disease.
Examples of people who may need this assistance include people who do not have a separate bedroom in their home away from a family member who is elderly or medically fragile, students in congregate dormitory settings, or people experiencing homelessness.
One King County resident needing a safe place for isolation and quarantine is currently staying at the Kent Central Avenue motel location. Individuals can only be placed into these sites after a health professional with Public Health - Seattle & King County has determined that they need isolation or quarantine.
The number of persons in King County's isolation and quarantine sites will be included in regular updates provided by Public Health - Seattle & King County. No other identifying or personal information will be provided.

We now know that COVID-19 is here to stay for the foreseeable future. It’s important to understand how to live our lives while keeping ourselves, loved ones and community as safe as possible. How can we do that? By using all the tools we’ve learned so far: staying up to date with COVID-19 vaccines, getting tested and staying home if sick or exposed, wearing a mask in crowds, and keeping our distance.

KENT, Wash. -- A homeless man who was using a King County-owned motel in Kent for isolation while he awaited test results on COVID-19 walked away from the facility Friday morning, against a guard's orders, King County officials said.

...The man had accepted a room at the former Econolodge Thursday that is currently intended for use for isolation and quarantine, according to officials. But on Friday morning around 7:30 a.m., the man walked out of the hotel ignoring a security guard's instruction to stay, and headed to a convenience store across Central Avenue, officials said.

CASE INFORMATION FOR SNOHOMISH COUNTY RESIDENTS

The Snohomish Health District is now providing daily updates on case counts in Snohomish County.
Starting March 12, our daily update on case counts will be issued at approximately 2 p.m.
Please be aware, as more testing has become available, we are getting increased numbers of reports from laboratories and other facilities. It takes time to reconcile data in order to report numbers accurately. Each table is labeled with when it was last updated on this page.
In addition, we report case numbers, including numbers of deaths, each day that are official through 11:59 p.m. the night before. People may hear directly from health care facilities that provide different numbers of deaths than our official count, and may be providing it before we have the information and a chance to reconcile the data.
Due to the increased numbers of cases and more data flowing into the Snohomish Health District that needs to be analyzed, we are no longer able to provide specific information about all cases as we did earlier in this outbreak.
We are committed to providing accurate information while respecting the medical privacy of those who become ill with COVID-19.

                  • Grand Princess Coronavirus Cases Likely Linked To Seattle Cases

Through genetic analysis of virus samples, infectious disease detectives said Friday that the coronavirus cases that appeared on the Grand Princess cruise ship are very likely traceable back to the original Seattle case that spurred the hot spot to our north — and it's therefore likely that more Bay Area cases can be traced back to the Seattle area as well.

ICYMI, genetic sequencing has already occurred on dozens of cases in Seattle that have been traced back to the 35-year-old man being called Patient Zero — though he's surely not the only Patient Zero in the American chapter of this pandemic.

As Bloomberg reported, the man arrived back in the U.S. from Wuhan, China on January 15, and he went to an urgent-care facility on January 19 after feeling ill and seeing a CDC alert about the coronavirus. He was fully recovered by January 21, but during the six days in which he was apparently that region's first case of COVID-19, the highly contagious pathogen infected numerous other people, and cascaded into the outbreak they have now — with 37 deaths to date in Washington State and at least 570 cases.

The outbreak in California is clearly behind the one in Washington, and as the Mercury News reports, scientists have looked at the small mutations in virus samples from patients that were on the Grand Princess cruise ship and similarly linked them back — in all likelihood — to that first Seattle case.

SEATTLE (AP) — The death toll from the new coronavirus in Washington state jumped to 40 on Saturday when King County health officials reported three new fatalities — two from the nursing home that's been the epicenter of the outbreak.

Two men in their 80s who were residents of Life Care Center in Kirkland died at area hospitals, officials said. A woman in her 70s died at Swedish First Hill, they said. Ninety-five Life Care employees were symptomatic as of Friday night and 47 tested positive for COVID-19, while 24 were negative, King County health said.

Washington state reported Saturday that statewide, almost 650 people have tested positive in 16 counties across the state. As of Friday, Idaho has reported two confirmed cases and Oregon reported at least 30 cases...
